Weiss and Netflix executive Peter Friedlander revealed that a scene from The Three-Body Problem caused a months-long delay
The show was finished and ready to be released in mid-2023. But the showrunners, who also include David Benioff and Alexander Woo, thought the first episode moved too quickly and was confusing. So they wrote a new scene to add to the beginning. However, the actors' strike prevented them from filming it:
Weiss: “We wrote the scene the day before the strike. It was literally five pages, but we really thought it was worth doing. Netflix was amazing. It would have been very easy for them to say, “You have The Three-Body Problem finished and ready to air, and we're holding it up for a five-minute scene?” It took some strength of mind to say 'Yes'.”
Friedlander: “I want to tell the best version of this story, and if there's a specific, pivotal moment that the producers want to capture and we have the time and resources to do so, I want to work out a solution with them. They were true professionals, true collaborators and had a clear vision. I don't want the audience to miss this. So it wasn't a difficult decision for me.”
The scene in question takes place at the beginning of the first episode of The Three-Body Problem. In just five minutes, the scene provides much-needed characterization and exposition for plot purposes, effectively introducing two characters.
Perhaps most importantly, the scene provides insight into the failure of science around the world
The scene seems to have benefited the show, and reviews of The Three-Body Problem have been mostly positive since the pilot. positive. This has led to critics and audiences scores on Rotten Tomatoes being 77% and 78% respectively. The Three-Body Problem has also climbed the viewership charts, suggesting it could become Netflix's new flagship series.
