The details of the film
Described as an “ensemble film”, Eddington is said to be a neo-Western that takes place during the pandemic. The pandemic aspect of the plot is interesting, given that Aster wrote the film in 2019 and only included the setting in one of the later drafts of the script.
Phoenix plays Sheriff Joe, corrupt and involved in side deals, who has a frosty relationship with his wife Louise (Stone). Joe also has a rivalry with the mayor of Eddington (Pedro Pascal) who is sleeping with Louise. Micheal Ward is the young deputy who becomes the scapegoat for Sheriff Joe's corrupt actions.
Additionally, there are two supporting characters, Dawn (Deirdre O'Connell) and Paula, who are described as “deeply involved in Q-Anon conspiracies” and active in the city's politics. In the film Aster will actually address the politics of COVID.
Aster (Hereditary and Midsommar) is fresh from last year's polarizing Beau Is Afraid. A24 has produced all three of his films so far, and Eddington will be their fourth collaboration.
