Netflix has released the first clip of Orion and the Darkness, Charlie Kaufman’s next animated fantasy film, featuring the star of The Little Mermaid Jacob Tremblay as the protagonist, the young Orion.

The video shows the boy meeting the Nocturnal Entities, including the character voiced by Angela Bassett, Dreams, who express their disappointment towards Buio (Paul Walter Hauser) for having irresponsibly brought Orion into their relaxation area. The film will be available on the streaming platform from February 2nd.

The Story of Orion

As per the description of the film ‘Orion seems very much like the typical elementary school child: shy, discreet, with a secret love. But beneath his seemingly normal surface, Orion is a swirl of adolescent anxiety, completely consumed by irrational fears of bees, dogs, the ocean, cell phone waves, killer manhole clowns, and even falling off a cliff. But of all his fears, what he fears most is what he faces every night: the dark. So when the literal embodiment of his worst fear visits him, Dark takes Orion away on a roller-coaster ride around the world to prove that there’s nothing to fear in the night. As the unlikely pair grows closer, Orion must decide if he can learn to accept the unknown, stop letting fear control his life, and finally embrace the joy of living..

The cast of Orion and the Dark, directed by Sean Charmatz and written by Charlie Kaufman, includes Paul Walter Hauser in the role of the Dark, Angela Bassett in the role of Dreams, Colin Hanks in the role of Orion as an adult, Natasia Demetriou in the role of Sleep, Golda Rosheuvel as Unexplained Noises, Nat Faxon as Insomnia, Aparna Nancherla as Silence and Ike Bariholtz as Light, with Werner Herzog as narrator.
