Tawny Newsomeknown for her role in Star Trek: Lower Decks, recently revealed some exciting details about Star Trek: Starfleet Academy – confirmed in March by Paramount+.
During a recent interview, Newsome shared his experience on the writing team of the new TV series, highlighting how Starfleet Academy will offer a new perspective on the Star Trek universe. The actress, who continues to voice Lt. Beckett Mariner on Lower Decks, has joined the show’s writer’s room, helping shape this promising young adult-focused show.
Newsome expressed great enthusiasm for the creative team behind Starfleet Academy, praising the work of the showrunners in particular Alex Kurtzman e Naga Landau in assembling a group of talented and fun people:
“It’s a new side of Starfleet. It’s a new side of Star Trek – which I think you can tell from the title. We hadn’t told this exact area yet. I can’t say enough about the people who work on it. For example, our team is maybe my favorite part of the job, because they’re all amazing. And I feel like I just made some amazing friends in that room…They’re all so fun. Our showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Naga Landau have done a job really amazing bringing together the best people on Earth. They’re all kind and funny. Everyone has a different set of skills. I love it. I think the audience will really love this show. Really”.
Not much has been revealed about the show yet, including the exact era in which it is set. However, Starfleet Academy’s announcement suggests that it could take place later the fifth (and final) season Of Star Trek: Discovery. This aligns with the events chronicled in the fourth chapter of Discovery, in which Starfleet Academy was reopened in the 32nd century after a century of interruption caused by the Great Fire.
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will introduce a host of new young characters, both human and alien, who aspire to careers in Starfleet. In the words of Kurtzmanthe show will be “really fun”in line with the comic approach and passion of Newsome per Star Trek.
Production is not expected until 2024, with a possible release on Paramount+ in 2025.
