Mike Flanagan has once again managed to give the public a great new horror TV series, bringing one of the most famous tales of Edgar Allan Poe. Since it arrived on Netflix last October 12, it has become one of the most watched TV series by subscribers on the streaming platform. Also thanks to the fact that the scariest party of the year is approaching, many have decided to watch Mike Flanagan’s new work in which Succession seems to meet Edgar Allan Poe. I protagonists of The Fall of the House of Usher they are, in fact, the sons of the corrupt pharmaceutical company CEO Roderick Usher. The entire progeny, composed entirely of inept and privileged young people, are targeted by a mysterious figure. Karma in the TV series has a face, that of Verna, played by Carla Gugino, who is always present on the scene before revenge falls on one of the Ushers. The script didn’t say much about her, leaving the viewers to elaborate the most disparate conjectures regarding her nature.

Now Carla Gugino, the talented actress of The Fall of the House of Usherdecided to reveal Verna’s true identity.

Most of the spectators he imagined that the enigmatic and seductive woman might be a personification of a demon or the devil himself. This vision comes from the big reveal that was made at the end of the story, when it is shown that Roderick and Madeline had made a particular deal with her. The two brothers would never suffer the consequences of their actions, but when the time came to die, they would take their entire lineage with them to the Underworld. The two Usher brothers on that New Year’s Eve did not sell their souls to the devil, but rather encountered a shape-shifting creature. Verna is a manifestation of the Raven from Edgar Allan Poe’s famous poem, symbolizing karma and death. And in fact the name of this character – Verna precisely – is precisely the anagram of the word “Raven”, which means “raven”. The actress herself confirmed this interpretation during an interview given for HILL:

She’s not the Devil… she’s not even evil! You could say she is the executor of destiny, or the executor of Karma. Verna is truly a shapeshifter. It manifests itself to every person in the moment before their death, while they can see it. Verna is giving each of these people the most honest conversation they will ever have in their lives. People with a lot of privilege and a lot of power have the opportunity to do good things or do bad things. She gives them the opportunity to make a different decision.”
