Britney Spears: 'Justin Timberlake's 'Cry Me a River' video turned me into a prostitute'

In her new autobiographical book The Woman in Me, Britney Spears accuses ex-boyfriend Justin Timberlake of turning her into a heartbreaking prostitute in his ‘Cry Me a River’ music video released in 2002. The song, the second single from Justified (Timberlake’s debut album), was inspired by his relationship with Spears and their breakup.

The two pop icons started dating in 1999 (they had known each other since the Mickey Mouse Club days), when Spears was 17 and Timberlake 18, and then separated in 2002. The music video showed Timberlake dealing with an unfaithful girlfriend who she resembled the ‘Baby One More Time’ singer and, at the time, became popular because she gave rise to rumors that Spears had cheated on the singer.

In her memoir, Spears describes the music video thus: “A woman who looks like me cheats on him and he wanders around in the sad rain“. Further on, the pop star talks about the media impact that the ‘Cry Me a River’ video clip had on her: “It turned me into a prostitute who broke the heart of America’s golden boy“while in reality she was in”convalescence in Louisiana“to recover from the breakup and Timberlake was”happily wandering around Hollywood“, writes the singer.

The Woman in Me

Spears’ new autobiographical book is already making quite a stir. A few days ago an excerpt was leaked that the singer had aborted at the time of her engagement to Timberlake. The Woman in Me is “a bold and astonishing story about freedom, fame, motherhood, survival, faith and hope. The book illuminates the enduring power of music and love, and the importance of a woman telling her own story, as she wishes. The Woman in Me reveals for the first time the incredible journey and strength behind one of the greatest performers in the history of pop music“. Britney Spears’ autobiography is available for pre-order and will go on sale from October 24.
