Ridley Scott has provided the first details on Denzel Washington’s mysterious role in Gladiator 2, teasing that he’ll play a rich guy with a grudge.
16 years later American Gangster, Denzel Washington returns to be directed by Ridley Scott in the epic The gladiator 2 in a hitherto mysterious role. Now Scott has provided the first details of the character, who will be “a very rich man with a score to settle”.
In an interview with Total Film magazine (via GamesRadar), Ridley Scott described the character of Washington as a “rich guy” who carries a latent grudge against his oppressors. The sequel promises to delve deeper into his past, exploring the circumstances of his capture and branding.
“As for Denzel’s character… There were gladiators who could earn their freedom if they stayed alive. That was the deal. So we focused on that. Where did he come from? How was he captured? He was branded and registered as a slave, he has a mark on his chest. That’s how he comes into the story. He’s a rich guy who still holds a grudge.”
