After a brief passage in theaters last September 15th, the feature film is available today – September 22nd – are Prime Video.

In the early eightiesthe young man Saul Armendariz he regularly crosses the border with Mexico to take part in some lucha libre matches – a famous style of Mexican wrestling. However, his career, carried out under the “battle” name of El Topo, failed to take off. Homosexual and free from prejudices, Saúl will therefore welcome the advice of his new coach, Sabrina, reinventing himself as exotic – a wrestler who fights disguised as a woman in lucha libre. Thus his alter ego was born Cassandro – renamed the “Liberace of Lucha Libre” – which will lead him not only towards unexpected success but also towards a path of emancipationin which he subverts the macho rules of wrestling and his private life.

Giving life to this complex and multifaceted character is Gael García Bernal who – giving yet more proof of his extraordinary talent – manages to take on both the most histrionic and the darkest aspects of Saúl, who during his life also attempted suicide and was a drug addict. Absent from the scene since 2022 – when he took part in the Marvel special Werewolf – Bernal therefore returns as the absolute protagonist of a project, in which he also partially reclaims his Mexican origins. They then complete the cast Roberta Colindrez, Perla de la Rosa, Joaquín Cosío, Raúl Castillo, El Hijo del Santo and Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio – Puerto Rican singer and actor known by the stage name of Bad Bunny. Instead we find the director Roger Ross Williamsnominated for an Oscar for best documentary for Life, Animatedwho also wrote the screenplay for the project together with David Teague. Gael García Bernal is also involved in the project as a producer, while the production team includes Amazon Studios, Double Hope Films, Escape Artists, Grand Illusion Films, La Corriente del Golfo, Motto Pictures and Panorama Global. The actor will then return to collaborate with Amazon for the Hitchcock-style thriller Holland, Michigan – in which he will share the set with Nicole Kidman, Matthew Macfadyen and the young Jude Hill, currently in theaters with Murder in Venice – and is also expected in the Hulu series Machine.
