The Bird with the Crystal Plumage (1970)
Already in his debut behind the camera, Argento dictates the precise and chilling coordinates of what will be his best cinema. The bird with crystal plumage it proves to be a visceral thriller, elegant in form, risky in its editing and use of music. Tony Musante he is a compelling protagonist, Suzy Kendall e Enrico Maria Salerno they integrate positively into the cast. Film with a masterful ending, and twists that still make you jump on your seat today. Available on Google Play, Amazon Prime Video, Rai Play.
The Cat O’ Nine Tails (1971)
Powerful and precise confirmation of Argento’s talent for the genre. The cat o’ nine tails it becomes even more splatter than the previous film, it proceeds through jolts and more daring directorial ideas. Not everything works compared to the first film presented, but the moments of suspense and terror are undoubted. Catherine Spaak she is iconic in her role for charm and elegance, Karl Malden a guarantee of accuracy in the definition of the character. It’s a lot of fun, and it certainly doesn’t hurt. Another cult title. Available on Google Play, Amazon Prime Video, Rai Play.
Deep Red (1975)
Dario Argento’s masterpiece in no uncertain terms, and one of the best films of Italian cinema of the 70s. From the sumptuous beginning to an ending with a twist magnificently orchestrated by the screenplay, co-written with Bernardino Zapponi. Deep red takes advantage of the participation of David Hemmings, Clara Calamai, Daria Nicolodi e Gabriele Lavia. A truly stunning, brutal and beautiful cinematic game of mirrors to experience firsthand. What a great thriller this remains. Always. Available on Infinity +Amazon Prime Video.
Sigh (1977)
Con Sighs In a certain way, Argento gives free rein to his aesthetic imagination, building a visual puzzle of undoubted aesthetic effectiveness. The story is what it is, a half plot to get to the pyrotechnic and terrifying ending. Alida Valliagain Nicolodi e Jessica Harper in an almost all-female cast that is undoubtedly well directed. We prefer Argento who works on thrillers rather than one who vents in horror, but this remains another cult title. Without a doubt. Luca Guadagnino’s remake still has its charm. Available on CHILIGoogle Play, Amazon Prime Video.
Phenomena (1985)
We chose to close with Phenomena not because, although valid and scary, it is the best of his films of that period. Story-wise Opera is probably superior to him. But the choice of a very young person Jennifer Connelly as the protagonist she is undoubtedly the trump card: the actress shows off an angelic and charismatic performance while next to her Donald Pleasance and all the others work pretty well. The ending in the swimming pool is gruesome, the rest becomes academic but with some very well orchestrated moments. Jennifer was our teenage “crush” thanks to this movie. So untouchable! Available on Google Play, Rai Play.
