The plot

Aspromonte The Land of the Last 1

Aspromonte, the land of the least: Marcello Fonte in a scene from the film

It is 1951, in Africo in the province of Reggio Calabria almost everything is missing, from running water to electricity, from school to the doctor. An unfortunate event, however, shakes the citizens: a young woman dies of part of her, the doctor who was supposed to assist her failed to arrive in time because there is no real connecting road. Thus the mayor begins to be bombarded with requests to build a safer and shorter road linking the small town to the more populous coast.
From Como, then, comes a teacher, dreamer and determined, who has every intention of working to change things, but the reactions of the local population will go from initial enthusiasm to hostility. This is because any possibility of improvement finds the firm opposition of some local bullies, such as Don Totò, the one who really commands the town.
