More than a decade after the two films met with limited success, author Rick Riordan’s young adult fantasy series is about to get a full-blown television adaptation on the Disney+ streaming platform. The Percy Jackson show, which follows the eponymous hero after he discovers he’s a demigod, wrapped filming in February and is currently slated for a 2024 release. Disney has been consistently touting the series, releasing a teaser trailer at D23 Expo last fall and a new poster ahead of San Diego Comic-Con.
In the image the three characters are posed, ready for battle, with Percy even clenching his hands into fists. Annabeth appears ready to take on the challenges ahead, while Grover is alert and prepared for the upcoming fights.
Even though the cast of the television series is not present at San Diego Comic-Con due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, Disney is ensuring that the fantasy film will be well represented at the convention. A Percy Jackson event of sorts has been announced for Saturday, July 22, which could be anything from a surprise installation to a trailer that could debut online soon after. While the show isn’t set to debut until next year, SDCC is the perfect place to start making waves.
Percy Jackson is currently one of the hottest Disney+ titles to come out and is one of the few that isn’t related to the Marvel Cinematic Universe or Star Wars. Its success would allow for a new franchise to be built from the ground up. Percy Jackson has previously been adapted into two films, which have drawn mixed reactions from fans of the books and which Riordan himself has disowned. The novels are home to a very large universe and this could lead to many potential projects for Disney.
The cast, led by Walker Scobell, has been warmly received by those already familiar with the source material, and Riordan has nothing but praise for the project. It also helps that he’s involved with the new Percy Jackson, whereas he wasn’t in the movies. All of this, coupled with Disney’s clear backing, indicates that the television series could become the next big hit in fantasy television.
