Manny Coto: The Screenwriter at 24 and Dexter died at 62

In recent years, the writer and producer had worked on the anthology series American Horror Story.

His is a name that you will surely have read while watching some of your favorite TV series. And we are sure that you will have appreciated his exemplary work several times. Manny Cotoone of Hollywood’s most talented writer and producer, Emmy Award winner for his work on 24 and known for his experience in Star Trek: Enterprise e Dexter, died on Sunday aged just 62. He had been battling pancreatic cancer for thirteen months.

Manny Coto had made his debut as a screenwriter in the late 80s, signing an episode of the TV classic Alfred Hitchcock presenta and, a few years later, de Tales from the Crypt. After various other work experiences, also on the big screen, in 2002 success came with his first creation, the series Odyssey 5, who betrayed a marked passion for unconventional stories. He told of the destruction of the Earth and the attempts of a group of astronauts in orbit to go back in time and stop the apocalypse thanks to the intervention of a mysterious individual known as The Seeker. Odyssey 5 it lasted only one season but, soon after, Coto joined the team of the phenomenon Star Trek: Enterpriseof which he would write over a dozen episodes and produce about twice as many.

Since 2006, Coto has served as a writer and executive producer on the FOX thriller 24, the biggest hit of his career. That same year, its first season, the fifth, was also the first and only season of the series to win the Emmy for best drama. In later years, she also signed the spin-offs 24: Live Another Day e 24: Legacywhich he created, after having worked for three years on the hit Showtime crime drama Dexter, from the fifth to the final season, receiving in 2011 its second Emmy nomination. In recent years she had had little luck with her newest creation NEXTwhile he had obtained new gratifications alongside Ryan Murphy in the horror series of FX American Horror Story e American Horror Stories.

“I started out as PA on his Super-8. He was my inspiration and guiding light, in work and in life. I have lost a brother and a great friend,” he wrote on Instagram the younger brother Juan Carlos Cotonow one of the writers and executive producers of 9-1-1 and in the past with him in 24. “This photo is from 2014 when I was privileged to present him with the Imagen Creative Achievement Award. I’ve sat on many panels where people have said they’ve never had someone they could count on as they got into this business. No one who had I did the same as I did. I never had that problem. I had Manny. He was fearless, and that allowed me to be fearless too. He joins our brother Jorge in heaven. Their memory will live on forever. Rest in peace.”
