Black Mirror: ChatGPT wrote an episode and it was ‘shit’

The Black Mirror episode written by ChatGPT turned out to be unusable, but it served its creator to realize the clichés present in the anthology series.

Black Mirror: ChatGPT wrote an episode and it was 'shit'

The creator of Black Mirror Charlie Brooker revealed to Empire that he tried to write an episode of the anthology series using ChatGPT. The end result was “shit” in his words.

“I played a bit with ChatGPT”Brooker said. “The first thing I did was type in ‘generate Black Mirror episode’ and something comes up that, at first glance, seems plausible, but at second glance it’s crap. Because all it’s done is search for all the Black Mirror episode synopses and putting them together”.

Charlie Brooker added: “If you dig a little deeper you say, ‘Oh, there’s actually no real original thinking here'”.

While the Black Mirror episode was unusable, it proved helpful for Brooker to become aware of several featured on the show:

“I was aware that I’d written a lot of episodes where someone says, ‘Oh, I’ve been inside a computer the whole time!’. So I thought, ‘I’m just bringing up the core of what I think is a Black Mirror episode.’ There’s no point in having an anthology show if you can’t break your own rules. It came down to a glass of cold water to the face.”.

Black Mirror 6: a moment of the series

Josh Hartnett, Kate Mara and Aaron Paul will star in an episode titled Beyond the Seawhich is set in an alternate 1969 and follows two men involved in a dangerous high-tech mission.

“It’s kind of a dystopian past, present and future”Brooker told Empire of the installment. “First I had the story idea and then, at one point, I was like, ‘What if I set this in the late 60s? That would be disruptive and cool!’ And then when you actually get to writing it, you realize, ‘Oh wait, if this is a different time and everyone here belongs to that time, that actually informs us about how the characters think and behave.’ was a deliberate rejection of nostalgia”.

Black Mirror 6 will debut on Netflix on June 15.
