After the wedding, severe difficulties begin for Sissi. She’s too young to consummate the wedding on the first night; Franz understands, but physically distances himself from her, spending the nights in other beds and with other companies. The collision with the rigid Habsburg ceremonial, then, is decidedly traumatic. His dear Fanny is immediately recognized as not suitable for the requirements of the court and abruptly dismissed without any regard. She finds herself poor, alone, in the pouring rain, at the mercy of three criminals. She is saved by the intervention of Lajos, a Hungarian patriot who is in Vienna to kill the Kaiser. Sissi and Franz move to Laxenburg, a castle on the outskirts of Vienna, to spend their honeymoon, but after what seems to be a happy start, Franz again distances himself from her.
