Producer Toshio Suzuki, co-founder of Studio Ghibli, has confirmed that How Do You Live?, the latest film by master Hayao Miyazaki, will arrive in Japanese theaters in July without any traditional promotion: no trailers, commercials, or images… part of the poster we know.
From How Do You Live?the latest effort of the master of the anime Hayao Miyazakiwe saw nothing outside of an enigmatic poster: well, we’ll have to settle for that until the movie comes out in Japanscheduled for July 14th. Interviewed by Bungei Shunji magazine, the producer Toshio Suzukico-founder of the Studio Ghibliclaimed this alternative and almost provocative promotional choice: no teaser, trailer or official image, apart from the poster. Material that always reveals too much, Suzuki explained.
Hayao Miyazaki’s How Do You Live will not have a trailer
Who fears spoiler also in official materials come trailer, scene, teaser o Photowill definitely be on the side of Toshio Suzukithe co-founder and producer of the Studio Ghibli. Il poster already widespread for How Do You Live? Of Hayao Miyazaki will remain theonly official element of the promotion of the feature-length anime until its release on July 14 in Japanese theaters. A decidedly extreme choice, which Toshio justified as follows:
We’re a company, and Ghibli has for years wanted people to come see the movies we’ve made. We thought a lot and did several things towards that end, but this time we said to ourselves: hey, we don’t need it. (…) There is an American film – the title nearly escaped me! — which comes out this summer around the same time. They made three trailers, released spaced out. If you see all three, you know everything that’s going to happen in the movie. What do viewers think? There will also be people who after seeing all the trailers, they won’t want to go see the movie. So I decided to do the opposite. (…)
I’ve been working on our films since Nausicaa in the Valley of the Windbut this was the first time that Hayao Miyazaki my has genuinely praised: “Suzuki-san, this is great, this is the coolest poster you’ve ever made“, he told me. I took it as a suggestion and decided: “This poster will be marketing. No trailers or TV commercials or anything else.” Not even newspaper ads. In my opinion, deep down, that’s what viewers want.
However, we know that How Do You Live? is based on 1937 novel written by Yoshino Genzaburothe story of a little boy growing up after losing his father, while his uncle keeps a diary of their conversations about challenges, life, relationships and worldview.
