Tom Hanks has recently returned to talk about his career, opening up for the first time about his failures and the films ‘he hates’.

Tom Hanks is undoubtedly a true icon of the big screen, but that doesn’t mean he’s had a career of only successes: during a conversation published by The New Yorker Live, the Oscar winner revealed that “hate” some of his own films, illustrating the process that goes through when making a film.
“OK, let’s face it: We’ve all seen movies we hate. Well, I’m in some movies that I hate“Hanks said.”You’ve seen some of my movies and you hate them. There are five points on the Rubicon that anyone making a film crosses: the first one crosses is to say yes to the film. Your fate is sealed. You will be in that movie. The second is when you actually see the movie you made. There are two possibilities: it was the film you wanted to make, or it’s the exact opposite“.
“This has nothing to do with Rubicon No. 3, the critical reaction to it – that is a version of the voice of the people. Someone will say: ‘I hate it’. Other people will say, ‘I think it’s brilliant.’ In between, there is usually the truth. The fourth Rubicon to cross is the film’s commercial performance. Because, if he doesn’t make any money, your career will be over sooner than you’d like. This is a fact. That’s the business. The fifth Rubicon is time”the star continued.
“Where does that movie go twenty years after you made it? What happens when people accidentally look at it? A great example of this is ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ which was made in 1946 and disappeared for more than twenty years. It wasn’t even considered a commercial success at the time but some people liked it and it was nominated for Best Picture“explained Tom Hanks.”It happened to me with a film I wrote and directed called Music Graffiti. I loved it but it wasn’t very successful. Today, the same magazines that initially ignored it are calling it ‘the Tom Hanks cult’. Now it’s a classic. What is the difference? The answer is time“.
