He final of The Marvelous Mrs. Maiselavailable to stream at Prime Video since last Friday, it’s been bittersweet (if you haven’t seen it yet, pay attention to the previews!). We rejoiced in Midge’s successes, who had a life filled with professional rewards and recognition, but she left a lump in our throats to discover that strenuously following her dreams made her a lonely woman. In her huge apartment in New York, an elderly Midge is not surrounded by any of the people she loved and with whom she was married, and all that remains is a few phone calls to her friend Susie, who for her old age has chosen a sunnier location.

What happened to everyone was more or less clarified by the numerous flash-forwards that accompanied us throughout the fifth and final season. In one in particular, we saw Midge’s Rachel Brosnahan fondly contemplate an old photo of her wedding with Joel, the ex-husband played by Michael Zegen. Many, including Zegen himself, have bitterly assumed that he is no longer alive at the time that future scene is set. Is Joel really dead? The actress gave the definitive answer in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel: Is Joel Dead?
“I know Joel is dead because I asked Amy (Sherman-Palladino, the creator of the series),” Rachel Brosnahan said with a mischievous laugh. “I think everyone died at that point, except Midge and Susie. Those two girls are like cockroaches. They will never die. They get walked on, over and over and over, but they have a thick exoskeleton.”

The creator and Rachel Brosnahan comment on the Prime Video series finale
Should the fact that she’s left alone in those sumptuous rooms, with only Susie on the other side of the world, be a cautionary tale? Even on this, Brosnahan was quite candid: “I think it is. Midge’s journey and life have been full of contradictions, big dreams, very high highs and very low lows. What Amy told me during the first season , and it’s something that I kept close, because I find it very beautiful and also deeply sad, when I asked her what would happen to Midge and Joel, if they would ever get back together, is that they would never do it again, because they wouldn’t were never able to be on the same page at the same time again. But that Midge, who lived in her Park Avenue penthouse with 20 poodles (the poodles were mysteriously absent in the finale), would always look back on the day before Joel left her like the happiest day of his life”.
