The singer Arisa will no longer be the godmother of Pride: some heavy insults received after her statements about Giorgia Meloni pushed her to this decision. Here’s what happened.
Singer Arise she will no longer be the godmother of Pride 2023: the artist has decided to give up, following the accusations and insults received, after some statements made on Giorgia Meloni and its policy towards the LGBTQ+ community.
Arisa will no longer be the godmother of Pride 2023: “I received very serious insults”
During an interview with Peter Gomez at The Confession, Arise stated that he appreciates Meloni and that as regards his policy of intolerance towards the LGBTQ+ community, the prime minister is like “a strict mother who is worried about her children”. A comparison that has sparked several criticisms from numerous members of the queer community – such as Vladimir Luxuria – and not only.
Despite having tried to further clarify her statements, the situation has only worsened and a few hours ago, in a post on her Instagram profile, the singer has announced that he will not be present at Pride in Milan and Romescheduled for 10 and 24 June. Here’s how he motivated his decision:
“Dear boys and girls, I am immensely sorry for the moment we are living together and I hope that over time we will be able to communicate again. For now, these are just very heavy insults from some of you that I don’t know how to decipher. Today, my manager was advised by the organizers, to tell me not to show up at Pride in Milan, due to the hypothesis that some members of the community could somehow embarrass me, I would have gladly come, but if I have done something serious enough to deserve such an exclusive treatment, I think I won’t even participate in the one in Rome. I’m really sorry. Happy Pride everyone, have fun for me too, I wish you to find a breakthrough plan and realize your legitimate dreams to be happy. See you I really wish it from the bottom of my heart. I will continue to live hanging out with old friends and I’ll let them tell you about it. But before saying goodbye, I want to write one last thing: diversity is made up of opinions, experiences and ways of seeing life. Diversity is wealth. You taught me that, maybe those people there love you all the same, but you think not. Times change, mothers whiten, flowers bloom and then wither and then are reborn. You have to work at it and always believe in it. If you play the love card you will always win. Bye bye LGBTQ+ people, best wishes. With love, Arisa.”
His words, however, did nothing but ignite the controversy: while not supporting Meloni’s government, with his words, the singer legitimized a policy that deprives an entire community of its rights. Many members of the queer community have expressed their disagreement with the words of Arise, inviting her to reconsider that you cannot have a dialogue with those who discriminate against you and that with her words she has not proved to be an ally, as she has always claimed to be. On several occasions, in fact, the artist was the godmother of the Pride of Naples in 2021 and that of Padua in 2022, while this time, she too, on the advice of her manager, preferred to take a step back. To comment on her words once again she intervened Vladimir Luxuriawith a photo taken together with the singer at Pride in Naples with a long post in which he revealed that his words had been difficult to accept:
“Dear Arisa, we took this photo at the pride of Naples: we had fun at this event, the same Pride that those of the Brothers of Italy have always opposed and denigrated. Everyone is free to change their minds but you can’t be surprised if we don’t were our applause. Your beautiful voice always moves me, your words don’t this time. I hope, after the media clamor, that there will be an opportunity for clarification. Dialogue is established between people of good will and if you say that Giorgia Meloni is a frightened mother, believe me we are much more frightened by the celebrations of the far right in Spain, by the victorious Erdogan who promises to strangle the traditional family (your beloved Giorgia complimented him) and also in our house there it’s a right-wing wind that blows away rainbow families, the hope of a homobitransphobic law and discriminates against trans people, in other words all the battles of our Prides you’ve been to…in the past.”
