The third episode of The Last of Us A long, long time moved viewers deeply, telling a touching story of two men who fall in love in the middle of the apocalypse. The success achieved by the episode (and by the show in its entirety) prompted the writers to make the episode’s script public.
Craig Mazinco-showrunner and writer of the episode, gave an introduction before inviting fans to immerse themselves in the script, talking about the creative process with Neil Druckman in its development:
“In the world Neil Druckmann and I built for this show, it was equally important to show how love could still thrive. I wanted to explore how two very different kinds of love – the generous and beautifying one, and the protective and possessive one – could coexist in balance. Bill and Frank embodied these two kinds of love. And for me, having been married for over 25 years, it was just as important to portray that kind of love…the enduring love that comes not just from attraction or chemistry, but also from mutual commitment.”.
Mature it also reflected on the importance and impact of love, a topic that was widely discussed at the time of the episode’s release. She emphasized how this sentiment can inspire people and leave a lasting impression on the lives of others. Given the reaction of viewers, it seems that the showrunner has hit the mark:
“My hope was that people would see Bill and Frank’s relationship as an honest, achievable, realistic love victory… even in the finale. This is not a failing of any life well lived or any love we share. It’s simply the final act of what was hopefully a beautiful story. And if we’re as lucky as Bill, we leave behind a lesson that inspires others to live like us. Frank changes Bill for the better. Bill changes Joel for the better. Joel changes Ellie for the better. That’s what love can do”.
The 64-page script is incredibly detailed and allows readers to understand how the originally two-hour episode was changed.
