While the debut of The Idol is scheduled for this summer, the new HBO TV series had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, an event that allowed critics to write their first reviews: with only 11 ratings currently submitted, the show has a 9% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
As of this writing, The Idol is the only product in network history with an approval rating in the single digits: as of today, is the lowest rated HBO show of all time.

But let’s talk about the reviews. Giving the soundtrack only a D grade, Collider asks: “How can a show with so much nudity, sex and eroticism be so limp?”. The London Evening Standard states that the series “looks more like seedy porn”with the Rolling Stone defining it “much worse than you would have expected”. The Daily Telegraph puts the icing on the cake, writing that “even the music is terrible”. The only positive review for the series comes via Vanity Fairwho writes: “The Idol offers enough entertainment to balance the aggression and bravado of its thematic ambitions”.
