As Citadel ends, Season 1 closes
How it ends Citadel. It concludes with the sixth episode, entitled “Nighttime secrets need morning rains”, the first season of the Prime Video action blockbuster. Here’s everything that goes down in the epic season 1 finale of Citadel, and what it means for the franchise.
Who dies in the Citadel
Before arriving at season finale it is important to take a step back, and go back to the fifth episode. We have witnessed numerous twists in the penultimate chapter: one of the most shocking facts was undoubtedly seeing Dahlia kill Anders.
Asha is the daughter of Mason and Nadia
The biggest revelation, however, concerns Nadia, who became pregnant by Mason and gave birth to a daughter, Asha, who decided to keep hidden from Mason. Today Asha lives in Valencia with Rahi Gambhir – a known terrorist and Nadia’s father – and Nadia hasn’t seen her for 8 years, that is since she received the dismissal in Italy. Nadia is also the one who found the Key to Oz – in the past – and destroyed it.

In the season finale, Kyle, Nadia and Carter risk everything to save their daughter Asha from Dahlia’s clutches. The mission that is entrusted to Mason is to acquire nuclear weapons that are located inside a submarine in the Pacific Ocean. Mason is the only one who can complete this task because, years before, he was the one who changed the password of the nuclear warheads and entered one that only he knew.
Over the course of the episode, Kyle kills Davik, and he and Nadia save Asha. It is also revealed that Mason knew of Asha’s existence and chose not to see her, as he feared that Citadel would inevitably end up putting Asha’s life in danger.
Who is the mole
The mole is… Mason, but that’s not all. Dahlia is Mason’s mother, and it was to her that Mason gave information on all of the Citadel agents eight years ago. Dahlia – who faked her own death, but is still alive and well – in the past managed to manipulate her son Mason by telling him that the explosion in Serbia in which his father died when he was five years old was caused precisely by Citadel, due to a calculation error.

Mason is the mole who gave Dahlia eight years ago the list of Citadel agents, their real identities and their whereabouts. Dahlia helped her son Mason by relaying Nadia’s location to him when he was desperate to find her. However, it was not Dahlia’s manipulation that convinced Mason to destroy the Citadel, but the discovery that he had a daughter.
Mason wanted to end Citadel once and for all in order to protect his daughter and make the world a better place for her. That’s also why Nadia vanished from the radar: she didn’t want Citadel to find out about little Asha’s existence.

In the present, Carter manages to assemble what is needed to create a new vial that could reactivate Kyle’s memories. This plan may not work – says Carter – but when he is inoculated with the serum, Kyle recovers all the memories related to his life from Mason. All, including the fact that he was the mole who destroyed Citadel, eight years ago.
Kyle remembers everything, but lies

In the final scene, the audience has confirmation that Kyle perfectly remembers his past as a Mason. As Nadia watches him from the other side of the glass, Celeste catches Kyle behind her and asks, “Do you remember?”, but Kyle lies and replies, “I don’t know,” as he hugs her. Kyle’s gaze rises and returns that of the spectator: it is clear that he has always omitted the truth, that is, that his memories of him from Mason’s past have never been erased. Nadia steps away from the glass through which she was observing Kyle and Celeste, and turns her back to her ex-lover who is actually her worst enemy.
Kyle certainly has a lot of guilt also towards Celeste, the former Citadel agent who is now the woman he married and with whom he had a daughter: it was in fact Mason who had her decommissioned, erasing all her memories.
