It’s not just the American writers’ strike that is slowing down the pre-production of the TV series.
It has been over a year since the last time of Euphoria on TV and yet, on the horizon, there is no trace of a date – not even indicative – for the new episodes of the third season. Last time, the revelation series of Sam Levinson winner of nine Emmys, two of them to the protagonist Zendaya, had been slowed down quite a bit by the Covid 19 pandemic. This time, however, things could be even worse for more than one reason, including the American writers’ strike, which has reached its fourth week. In an interview with DeadlineHBO drama manager Francesca Orsi shed some light on the situation, proposing still long waiting times.
Euphoria: When is Season 3 coming out?
It’s not just the Writers Guild of America strike that’s slowing down pre-production on season 3 of Euphoria. In recent months, Sam Levinson, the series’ sole writer, has been busy in the writers room and as a director on the set of another HBO drama, The Idolco-designed by him, to be released next month (in Italy on Sky Atlantic and streaming on NOW from 5 June with the subtitled version and from 12 June with the version dubbed into Italian).
“Euphoria is a series that we had begun writing in tandem with the post-production of The Idolbut right now we don’t have many scripts,” revealed Orsi. “We can’t start filming, so the release of this series – ideally in 2025 – depends on when we can resume work with Sam, who has currently put down pencils and is finalizing the post-production of The Idol“.
The risk, especially if the strike were to last for months, to which Zendaya’s busy schedule is added, is that the wait for season 3 of Euphoria may continue for another two years. A ghost that also hovers over other network series in pre-production before the turmoil, such as The Last of Us e The White Lotus. “While everything is at a standstill right now, I hope that the situation clears up sooner rather than later. Otherwise we will have to reconsider the 2024 schedule, which shows will be ready (only) in 2025. The series I am trying to air would not necessarily be ready if this strike lasts six to nine months. So, yeah, that’s a big question mark for us, but I think we’ll deal with that situation once we get there.”
