Yana_C voices Ariel in the singing parts of the new The Little Mermaid. You told us how you faced this important commitment … and with what sense of responsibility.
On its first day of programming in Italy, the remake from the Mermaid has already collected over 630,000 euros, and while waiting for the results of the first weekend, we focus on It’s_C: the singer lends her voice to Ariel (Halle Bailey) in the Italian version of Rob Marshall’s film, in the sung parts of the character, while the speech was entrusted instead to Sara Labidi. We met Yana_C at a press conference, and here’s what she told us about hers I commit on this reimagining of the Disney classic…
Yana_C and The Little Mermaid: “Voice is for sending messages”
It’s_Cborn Cristiana Cattaneo, was born in Angola and then moved to Italy when she was thirteen. She graduated from the Academy of Music and Entertainment MAS, Music Art and Show, she published her first song “Last Night” in 2020, and was chosen by the Disney to interpret the sung parts of Ariel in the new version of The little Mermaidalready in the cinema.
“I had done a couple of of tryouts” – he tells us – “When they told me at first I didn’t believe it, it was a dreamI understood that the audition was for this part, I was in Angola with my mother and i burst into tears. I had never ventured into dubbing, e this way of singing is closer to the musical. He was a emotional and technical commitmentbut very funny. I feel in many ways of be part of a change. Being chosen was an important moment.”
How he tackled some iconic pieces, like “Part of Your World” (simply “The little Mermaid” in Italian)? “It wasn’t the most difficult piece, vocally, for me the difficulty was mostly in theinterpretation… and in sound. I’m more used to singing in English!” Singing in Italian was his difficulty, but with Halle Bailey he has one thing in common much of the vocal range. Giving interpretive nuances to every sentence, to every line, is more difficult for non-acters. “You are great responsibilityof course: I wanted to live up to the original cartoon, also to contrast the controversy which is mounted”.
“For the first time” is one of new songs written for this remake: Ariel sings it when she first arrives on land. “When I heard her in the original it gave me a fit, but then she finally revealed herself the most fun to do. Acting-wise, it’s very demandingas well as on a singing level.” Mixing these two aspects was very significant for her, on an emotional and technical level: a school.
The story is about vocein a physical sense but obviously also erecting it a symbol: “Without a voice I could even die. I try to take care of it, I try to avoid bad habits. In a metaphorical sense, the voice is fundamental”. And it is the medium that, through music, can send a strong message.
