And so after weeks, months, years, we got there. Netflix has officially entered its new era, also in Italy. An era of changes, of renewed ambitions and of risks to take to try and make earnings soar, even at the cost of losing some users: this is the challenge that the most famous streaming platform in the world is proposing to win, a challenge that as you know by now concerns the end of sharing accounts. An idea that started from afar, tested and experimented in some Latin American countries, in Canada and then landed in Europe: Spain, Portugal and, as of yesterday, Italy are the first European countries to be involved in the new Netflix program relating to blocking the ability to share passwords outside the household. Unless, of course, you pay extra.
Netflix: will it be possible to continue sharing the account outside the household? Yes, but you will have to pay an extra sum
Let’s clarify it for those who, in the cauldron of news of the last few weeks, have not yet understood it: Netflix will not prohibit the sharing of accounts outside of one’s own household in a general sense. Netflix will continue to allow this practice, but against an extra payment, an additional monthly sum to be paid to the platform in addition to that of the basic subscription plan. Basically, to give an example: if you pay Netflix 13 euros a month, to add a non-household person to your subscription, you will find yourself paying 18 (to be divided between you and the extra person). But there are some necessary distinctions to be made, so it is necessary to go into a little more detail.
The part of the Netflix email that refers to the extra costs to be incurred
There is a part of the email that starting yesterday Netflix began to send to its Italian subscribers which refers precisely to the possibility of adding a user who is not part of our household to your subscription plan, specifying costs and methods. We report it here:
“To share Netflix with people outside your household, you can use these features: Transfer a profile (anyone using your account can transfer their profile to a new paid subscription); Buy an extra user (You can share your Netflix account with someone who doesn’t live with you for an additional cost of €4.99/month). If you have any questions, you can find detailed information in our Help Center. Thank you for choosing Netflix. We appreciate your continued support and look forward to bringing you an ever-growing selection of quality movies and TV series.”
One important thing: Netflix, in relation to what is written above, specifies *Currently not available to subscribers paying through our partners». It means that the possibility of sharing an account at the extra cost of 4.99 euros per month will be reserved only for those who purchase the Netflix subscription directly from Netflix, and not from other Netflix partners (such as Sky, for example). For those who purchase the subscription from a partner, there will be no possibility of ‘purchasing an extra user’ at a cost of 4.99 euros per month, but instead a different separate single subscription will have to be subscribed.
Netflix: How many accounts can you add to your account with the ‘Buy an extra user’ feature?
This aspect has not yet been clarified by Netflix and more specific communications are expected in relation to Italy. But we can refer to the Spanish experience to understand more or less what we should be entitled to. In Spain the cost per add a person per subscription is 5.99 euros per person. The situation changes depending on which plan you choose: who has the Standard plan can add one more memberwhile who has the Premium plan he can add up to two. Applying it to our case, considering that the amount to be paid in Italy is 4.99 euros (and not 5.99 euros) more per person with whom to share the account outside our household, if you use the standard plan you should pay 18 euros per month (13+5) by sharing the account with a person outside the household, if you use the Premium plan instead, you should be able to share the account with two people outside the family unit, with a total cost of 28 euros per month (18 + 5 + 5).
Ultimately, with these figures, we would end up paying 9 euros per month to split the subscription with one person using the basic plan, and 9.33 euros per month to split the subscription with two people using the Premium plan.
Figures and details still to be made official, but it is very probable that the Italian situation will mirror the Spanish one, net of the fact that in Italy it will be possible to pay 1 euro less per person added to the main account.
We look forward to further details that we will promptly communicate to you: here are others relating to the stop situation for shared accounts.
