On the occasion of Star Wars Day, we take stock of the live-action series set in the Galaxy far, far away: here’s what they are, when they come out and which actors they involve.
In the beginning there was The Mandalorian. Arrived in 2019 as a flagship project on the occasion of the launch of the platform Disney+the series with Peter Pascal as the bounty hunter Din Djarin ushered in a thriving season for the stories of Star Wars to follow on the small screen. Today the serie tv live-action set in the far distant Galaxy have multiplied giving life, in some cases, even to narrative macro-universes. This is the case with the so-called Mandoverse which encompasses the narrative strands presented in the series set in the era of the New Republic – viz The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka e Skeleton Crew – and which will culminate in a film directed by Dave Filoni. Then there are the lively animated series The Bad Batchthe anthology Visions (with the second season coming out today, May 4), Tales of the Jedi e Young Jedi Adventures. But which live-action Star Wars series will we see streaming on Disney+ in the coming months and years? On the occasion of Star Wars Daylet’s order among the many Lucasfilm announcements.
Star Wars series on Disney+: All upcoming live-action titles
Ahsoka
What is it about. Set in the era of the restoration, after The Return of the Jedi, Ahsoka focuses on the former Jedi Knight played by Rosario Dawson (a character who made his live-action debut in the second season of The Mandalorian and later appeared in The Book of Boba Fett). The series, consisting of 8 episodesfollows her as she investigates a threat looming over the vulnerable New Republic.
He cast. In addition to Rosario Dawson, they are confirmed in the series Natasha Liu Bordizzo (The Society) who plays Sabine Wren, a character already seen in the animated series Star Wars: RebelsWhile Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Fargo) who plays Hera Syndulla. Other characters that we will see (or see again) will be Senator Mawood (Maurice Irvin), Senator Rodrigo (Jacqueline Antaramian), Chancellor Mon Mothma (Genevieve O’Reilly), Senator Xiono (Nelson Lee) and the Grand Senator (Erica Duke). There will be too Lars Mikkelsen (Star Wars Rebels) as Grand Admiral Thrawn, David Tennant (Star Wars: The Clone Wars) who will voice the droid Huyang… and a droid named Chopper. They complete the cast Ray Stevenson as Baylan Skoll e Ivanna Sakhno in that of Shin Hati. According to some rumors, it could also appear in the series Hayden Christensen as the number one Star Wars villain Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader.
When it comes out. August 2023 (a precise date is to be defined).
Star Wars: Skeleton Crew
What is it about. Set in the era of the New Republic, Skeleton Crew follows the journey of four children who make a mysterious discovery on their seemingly safe home planet, only to become lost in a strange and dangerous galaxy. To find their way home, they will meet unlikely allies and enemies and embark on an adventure greater than they ever imagined. The series, also presented as “A Goonies meeting ET in the Star Wars universe” or a “Stranger Things in space”, involves the director of Spider-Man: No Way Home Jon Watts and the screenwriter of Spider-Man: Homecoming Chris Ford.
He cast. There are Jude Law (The Third Day), Kerry Condon (The spirits of the island) e Tunde Adebimpe (The Girlfriend Experience). The four protagonist children are played by Ravi Cabot-Conyers, Kyriana Kratter, Robert Timothy Smith e Ryan Kiera Armstrong.
When it comes out. It is currently in post-production and will arrive by the end of 2023.
The Acolyte
What is it about. Set about a century before the events of the film Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace and in a galaxy of mysterious secrets and dark side powers in the era of the High Republic, The Acolyte looks like a mystery thriller series. It tells the story of a former Padawan who reunites with his Jedi Master to investigate a series of crimes, but the forces they face are more sinister than they bargained for.
He cast. Power Stenberg (The Hate U Give) plays the main Padawan, Lee Jung-jae (Squid Game) is the Jedi master, Joonas Suotamo. (Solo: A Star Wars Story) is a Jedi Wookiee named Kelnacca, Rebecca Henderson (Inventing Anna) is Vernestra Rwoh. They complete the cast Manny Jacinto (The Good Place), Jodie Turner-Smith, Daphne Keen (His Dark Materials), Charlie Barnett (Russian Doll), Rebecca Henderson (Inventing Anna), Carrie-Anne Moss (Marvel’s Jessica Jones), Dean-Charles Chapman (Game of thrones) e Daisy Levieva (Revenge).
When it comes out. Currently 4 episodes have been completed. It will arrive in 2024.
Andor (season 2)
What is it about. The prequel series of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Andor tells the story of Cassian Andor (again played by Diego Luna) before he became the hero of the Resistance we had already known. In Season 1 we discovered how, after the murders (one accidental, the other in cold blood), Andor crossed paths with Luthen Rael (Stellan Skarsgård), becoming a key member of the nascent Resistance movement. The first season takes place chronologically five years before the events of Rogue One and covered a year of history. Season 2 will consist of 12 more episodes and will cover the remaining four years before the events of Rogue One.
He cast. diego luna, Stellan Skarsgård, Genevieve O’Reilly (as Mon Mothma), Denise Gough (Dedra) e Kyle Soller (Syril); in forse Forest Whitaker (Saw Gerrera) and Adriana Arjona (Bix).
When it comes out. According to showrunner Tony Gilroy, there’s a good chance the new episodes will arrive in the summer of 2024.
Lando
What is it about. Announced way back in 2020, Lando should tell the adventures of one of the most famous characters in the Star Wars universe, the smuggler Lando Calrissian also referred to as “the galaxy’s favorite scoundrel”. Described as an event series (hence a miniseries), it is developed by justin simon (Dear White People).
He cast. Donald Gloverwho played a young Lando Calrissian in Solo: A Star Wars Story of 2018, he is expected to return to the role. However, due to his busy schedule, he was unable to devote himself to this project. For his part, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said everyone is “waiting patiently for him.” We may review in the series too Billy Dee Williamswho played the adult Lando in Star Wars Episodes V, VI, and IX, and Alden Ehrenreich who played the young Han Solo in the film dedicated to him.
When it comes out. It is too early to speculate on a release date or window.
The Mandalorian: Will there be a fourth season?
After the third season, finished a few weeks ago, The Mandalorian will come back with one fourth season? Franchise head Jon Favreau said in February 2023 that he has already written season 4, which won’t necessarily be the final one. “I love these stories to continue on and on. I’m looking forward to so much more,” he told Total Film.
Will The Book of Boba Fett and Obi Wan-Kenobi have second seasons?
On the other hand, the second seasons of The Book of Boba Fett e Obi Wan-Kenobi. The first, which followed the legendary bounty hunter, played by Temuera Morrisonand the mercenary Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen) as they claimed their right to the territory once ruled by Jabba the Hutt, was conceived as a single story. As anticipated, the story will culminate in the event film which will also include the strands of the other series set in the era of the New Republic. Kathleen Kennedy told Variety that the second season of Obi-Wan Kenobi, the series centered around the title’s iconic Jedi master character, “is not in active development.” However he added: “Never say never, because there is always the possibility.” Even the protagonist Ewan McGregor on several occasions he has reiterated that he is open to a second season if the story devised is convincing.
