It tells of a Jewish family from Bologna, i Mortarwhose life is turned upside down when, in 1858, the 7-year-old son, Edgardo, is kidnapped by the pope’s army. The child had been secretly baptized by his nurse, so the law of the Papal States required a Catholic education.
