We all know Ben Affleck today, but that wasn’t the case in 1992. Today the actor is one of the most acclaimed in Hollywood and has a considerable number of successes behind him, but in 1992 he was twenty and something had to be done to launch himself in this golden way. That something Ben Affleck remembers well, also because it was probably one of the most embarrassing episodes of his life. The artist told the curious anecdote in a recent interview granted to The Late Late Show con James Corden.
The film in question is Buffy – The Vampire Slayera film that preceded the hugely successful TV series that we all know and which included in its cast well-known names such as Hilary Swank, David Arquette, Kristy Swanson and Luke Perry, as well as obviously Ben Affleck who had a small part: number 10 basketball player. A small part that, apparently, he didn’t play well.
“I felt it. I felt genuinely scared. And then I went to see the movie with friends… and it sounded very different. And I realized right then that they re-recorded my line“.
In practice, Ben Affleck only discovered that he had been dubbed once he went to the cinema with friends to see the film in which he had taken part. Imagine the general embarrassment of that moment for the actor, who proudly went with his friends to see each other on the big screen and then had to discover that another voice had been ‘put on’ him. In this regard, the actor also said:
“Apparently I was so terrible in the movie that my only line, which I think was ‘take it’, was dubbed, even though I thought it was fine and the director seemed happy. I went to see the film by buying a ticket and I realized it wasn’t my voice, it wasn’t me. Apparently the director hated my performance so much that he dubbed my only line! I was dubbed into English!“
