Helen Mirren and Gillian Anderson appear in the new trailer for White Bird, a spin-off film from the 2017 film Wonder.

Lionsgate will bring the new chapter of Wonder to cinemas this summer. The spin-off, titled White Bird, tells the heartwarming story of Julian’s grandmother played by Helen Mirren. The boy changed schools after being expelled for cruelty against Auggie. So her grandmother tells him about a painful parenthesis of her youth, when she was just a little girl wanted by the Nazis. His memories are set in a Nazi-occupied France in the 1940s. He meets a boy who walks with a brace and crutch and is teased by the rest of his companions for this. Julian’s grandmother also knows the cruelty, targeted for being Jewish. Then when the Nazis arrive at the school to take away all the Jews, Sara manages to escape thanks to that boy who, at a crucial moment, offers her kindness and shelter. And she is spending time together, holed up in a house in the woods with her mother Vivienne (Gillian Anderson), that the two little boys will learn what it means to be brave.
Come White Bird si collega a Wonder
While telling a different story, Wonder and White Bird have different common points. The most obvious is of course Juliana character already introduced in Wonder and played by Bryce Gheisar. While in the first film Julian behaved like a bully, demonstrating a certain cruelty towards Auggie, in White Bird he is forced to face the consequences of his actions as well as listen to his grandmother’s tragic story. Attending the new school, Julian will taste firsthand what it’s like to be a victim of bullying. Both films glorify the theme of kindness. Directed by Marc ForsterWhite Bird is expected to hit theaters in August 2023.
