The chimera, the first photos of Alice Rohrwacher’s film in competition at Cannes 2023

Today, Thursday 13 April, the program of the next Cannes Film Festival was presented. Among the films in competition there is also La chimera, directed by Alice Rohrwacher and of which we reveal the first photos.

The complete program of 76th Cannes Film Festival was announced a few hours ago and among the titles in competition there are three Italian films: La Chimera Of Alice Rohrwacher, Kidnapped Of Mark Bellocchio e The Sun of the Future Of Nanni Moretti. Per Alice Rohrwacher is the third return to Cannes Film Festivalafter 2014, when he won the grand jury prize with The wondersand 2018, the year in which it won the award for best screenplay thanks to Happy Lazarus. And, after applying to the Oscar Award of this year with The pupils nominated in the Best Short Film category, the director has not been able to hold back the enthusiasm and pride of being able to return to the Croisette with her new work.

Cannes 2023, Alice Rohrwacher in competition with La Chimera: the first photos revealed

The film will be set in the 80s and will feature the protagonist Josh O’Connor in the role of a young English archaeologist, involved in the clandestine traffic of archaeological finds, fueled by grave robbers. In the cast are also present Isabella Rossellini, Carol Duarte, Alba Rohrwacher e Vincent Nemolato. Rohrwacher so commented on the news that his too La Chimera will be presented in competition at the next Cannes Film Festival:

“I am happy and honored to be back in the official selection at Cannes after 5 years. A Festival that has seen me grow and that has given me the freedom to continue searching, to experiment. I thank Thierry Frémaux and the selection committee for their trust and all the people who accompanied me on the long journey of La Chimera.”

The film will be distributed in Italy by 01 Distribution, while in the United States of America by NEON. For La Chimerathe director returns to collaborate with two historic names in her filmography: Helene Louvart (director of photography), the editor Nelly Quettierthe set designer Emita Frigatothe costume designer Loredana Buscemi e la acting coach Tatiana Lepore. To celebrate the news of the presentation of La Chimera a Cannes 2023 the first photos of the film have also been released.

The presence of Rohrwacher at the Croisette it is important not only for Italy, but also because the director is one of the six women to be able to compete this year at the Festival for the prestigious Palme d’Or, breaking last year’s record of 5 female directors. This year, in competition, there will be Jessica Hausner, Catherine Breillat, Justine Triet, Ramata-Toulaye Sy e Kaouther Ben Hania. Not to mention that even the opening film, Jeanne du Barry– although not part of the official competition – will be directed by the director Maiwenn and the names of various directors also appear in the other sections.
