The two brothers find themselves separated and will have to do everything to find each other and understand that only if they are together will they make something ordinary (like simple plumbers) extraordinary.
We are at Brooklyn and we see a TV commercial of the Super Mario Bros: two awkward Italian-American plumbers. Two brothers, one opposite to the other, like red and green, two completely opposite but complementary characters. Business is bad and the family, especially the father, are dissatisfied with the two brothers. Mario sad and disconsolate as he removes the mushrooms from his spaghetti (Yes, Mario doesn’t eat mushrooms), he finds an opportunity to redeem him and Luigi, hoping to be recognized for their true value. A simple plot, linear like the various video game missions. Entering a world, being able to reach the end towards that coveted flag in a climb full of emotions and changes.

fans of Super Mario they will live this cinematic experience by chasing references and quotations from the game on the screen. From the shots, to the music perfectly remixed inside the film. Many easter egg are easily recognizable, while others are hidden like the best secrets of a video game. The story is not deep. That’s not the purpose of the film. We want to play and have fun and the goal is achieved with flying colors.
Illumination Entertainment has done an excellent job creating the daily life of the Mushroom Kingdom, known in video game form only in a stylized form in the background. Unlike other animated films that have attracted homage from critics (see The Lego Movie), Super Mario Bros. The Movie does not push too much on the accelerator, remaining on the story of family adventures. Yet she runs – and “flies” – on the famous Go-kart. Between drifts, turbos, all the dynamics of the video game Super Mario Kart that made us scream, enrage, but also rejoice. Reviewing certain sequences on the screen and the “cursed” Track Rainbow it increases a certain sense of joy in the hearts of the players.

In this film structured like a multi-level video game, starting from the tutorials up to the final boss, the film is an animated amusement park. Mario he must find and save his brother Luigi. The Princess saves herself – with a lot of reference to Frozen -, and in all this the film also gives the viewer a beautiful moral. Above all there is brotherhood, the union of the family with whom you played as a child – but not only – and you found a sense of togetherness that you can now feel even at the cinema.
An animated film is successful when the dubbing works too, and in this case it’s great. Apart from some extremisms in the Italian-American stereotype, Claudius Santamaria – unrecognizable – excellent double Mario. Super Mario finally has its own dedicated film.
