HBO Max would be one step away from ordering the long-awaited series set in the Harry Potter universe: the novels remain the source material.
The much talked about and long awaited TV series based on the Harry Potter franchise could soon become reality. A report of Bloomberg reveals that Warner Bros. Discovery would be one step away from ordering a television projectintended for streaming video service HBO Max. According to rumors, she would also be in talks to be involved as executive producer the author of the novels of the saga J. K. Rowling.
The TV series set in the universe of Harry Potter: What we know
A live-action series based on Rowling’s successful novels has been talked about since January 2021 when for the first time The Hollywood Reporter reported on some conversations between Warner Bros and potential writers. The stumbling block then as now would have been only JK Rowking who, owning all the rights to the franchise, would have had the last word on everything. The new developments, however, speak of an involvement of the writer in the production team.
The new television project, again looking for lead writer and showrunnershould draw directly from seven books of the saga. The initial idea, as reported by Bloombergexpects the potential tv series to develop for seven seasonsi.e. one for each novel (therefore it would not draw on complementary materials as was done for the films of Fantastic animals). At the moment we do not know anything else either about cast nor on the details of the plot.
When could the official announcement come?
The negotiations, in any case, would still be ongoing and the potential TV series has not yet been made official. An announcement could be coming soon, as Warner Bros. Discovery is holding a press event tomorrow to launch its new streaming video service. It might be the right time to officially break the news.
What is certain is that the company certainly does not intend to give up on a franchise that has grossed more than 7 billion dollars. Warner Bros. Discovery CEO, David Zaslav, repeatedly underlined the importance of the saga, which has always been the studio’s spearhead. Zaslav has met with Rowling several times and has spoken out in support of the author when she was embroiled in controversy following some of her comments on transgender issues he deemed unfortunate.
