A time jump takes us into the 2018. The friends, excluding Robin, gather at the MacLaren’s. Barney makes a point: he’s not interested in any other long-term relationships. In 2019 they meet again on the occasion of a typical event of the group: Robot contro Wrestler. Barney reveals that he wrote a new one Playbook and completed the “perfect month”, but the last girl remained PRECINCT. Robin’s absence saddens everyone, especially Lily. Ted meets the reporter (who has become quite famous) in New York: the two friends talk a bit. A few months later, he was born Ellie, the daughter of the group’s playboy. Barney gives the audience one of the most moving moments of the series, a sentence dedicated to his little daughter:
“You’re the love of my life. All that I have… And all that I am… Is yours. Forever”
Ted’s wedding
Ted reconfirms himself a incurable romantic: decides to reformulate the marriage proposal to Tracy again. The two plan to get married in a few days. This ending has always been divide fans, eager to discover the identity of the “mom” of Penny and Luke Mosby. Last Forever has unleashed a real pandemonium on the net. The various social networks were clogged with protest messages from angry fans from all over the world. An online petition has even started in an attempt to get CBS to reshoot the episode. Two schools of thought have formed which have divided the fans into two opposing sides in “war” with each other: Yellow Umbrella vs. Blue French Horn.
Probably Yellow Umbrella beats Blue Horn. Ted’s decision to try again with Robin, six years after the disappearance of his wife, is not only plausible, but it is also the happy ending that there should have been in order not to end the series in an excessively dramatic way. However, many fans felt cheated and criticisms and questions flocked. I myself have made them and tried to give me some answers.
Why was Mother liquidated so quickly? This is true, it is a fact. Cristin Milioti has been very little used in this ninth season and Tracy’s illness is practically only hinted at immediately before the news of her death. However, this may have an explanation: prevent the public from becoming too fond of the Mother. However, the authors’ error was enormous. Fans didn’t become so attached to the character Tracy, but rather to what she represented and that is “The Mother”: a legendary figure around which the entire series revolved, the living manifestation of destiny as well as Ted’s only chance to be happy after so much suffering.

Why didn’t we dwell even a second on Ted’s suffering after the loss? How I Met Your Mother after all it is a sitcom, very complex and with many dramatic elements, but it is still a comedy. Over the seasons we have seen Ted more and more depressed and disheartened. Now however, albeit in the suffering of memory, he is confident in love and romantic again and all thanks to Tracy.
Was Tracy the love of Ted’s life or just a plan b? There can be no doubt how much Ted loved her. The most beautiful and heartfelt phrases of the whole series are dedicated to her. The dialogue at the station under the yellow umbrella, when each realizes that they are the fate of the other, is simply goosebumps. Tracy is the love of a lifetime. The fact that Ted after her death decides to start over with the only other woman he really loved her does not make her a poor plan b.
During the autumn of 2015, the box set containing all the DVDs of the entire series will be released. Inside there is also a official alternate ending. Carter Bays stated on his Twitter account that he only shot one script for the final episode, but that he got it in the editing stage two completely different conclusions.
