Gangster Story (1967)
One of the films that most contributed to changing the productive history of Hollywood is a syncopated and innovatively edited road thriller. Arthur Penn builds Gangster Story like a mirror film, which tells the story of two outlaws who live on the margins of a society that for better or for worse has created them and made them proliferate. As well as a great Beatty and the equally iconic Faye Dunawaywe also find Gene Hackman e Gene Wilder. A very violent and heartbreaking ending for a breaking moment, capable of opening the doors to the so-called “New Hollywood”. First Oscar nomination for Beatty. Available on CHILI.
I Shared (1971)
Beatty chooses to go and make one of the most fascinating and radical films of Robert Altmana snowy and extreme story of solitude, frontier life, existential emptiness. I shared it denies all the rhetoric of the previously made western, it rewrites its moral and aesthetic coordinates. A watershed film that cannot leave you indifferent, whether you love it or reject it. Julie Christie is also magnificent, in fact she gets an Oscar nomination for best actress. Perhaps Beatty’s best performance as an actor. Available on CHILI, Google Play.
Why a Murder (1974)
One of the most interesting and successful political and social thrillers of the decade. Alan J. Growing up builds a narrative and cinematic mosaic of the highest order, in which Beatty plays a man trapped in a spider web where nothing is as it seems. Why a murder it reaches heights of emotional depth not yet explored in that period, and confirms the absolute goodness of its author and its protagonist. Not as celebrated as Three Days of the Condor which came out the following year, but absolutely deserves a respectful viewing. Available on Amazon Prime Video, Paramount +.
Heaven Can Wait (1978)
The remake of the classic directed by Ernst Lubitsch Warren Beatty sews it on, and we must say that it fits him perfectly. Heaven can wait is a philosophical comedy of great impact, delightful in the relationships between the characters and romantic in the main love story. Still Julie Christie splendid as always, with actors of such great comedic talent alongside them Charles Grodin e That’s Cannon. Tons of Oscar nominations including Best Picture, Director, Actor and Supporting Actor to a rock solid Jack Warden. An intelligent cinema classic of the decade. Available on CHILI, Google Play, Paramount+.
Reds (1981)
The story of John Reed and the Soviet revolution told through the eyes of an American is one of the event films of the decade, a heartfelt and dazzling colossal, which turns out to be a box office failure but one cannot help but love it. In addition to Beatty – who wins the Oscar for best director – we find a superb Diane Keaton it’s a Jack Nicholson by applause in the role of Eugene O’Neill. Reds it is a film like a river, which transports the viewer away to an age of ideals and battles, of trust and love without borders. Hollywood show with a European heart and a very personal vision. To be admired, it makes you cry cats and dogs. Available on Paramount+.
