“We want it to be fun. It’s not really a comedy, but it’s an action-fantasy film with a lot of comic elements and characters that we hope people will really enjoy and enjoy watching their adventures.” Jonathan Goldstein.
Dungeons & Dragons – Thieves’ Honor is a film that can aim to become a true blockbuster. A product that amuses, entertains and allows everyone to enjoy cinema, or rather, a campaign that wants to include everyone. Both gamers will like it D&D than to the profane. That’s because it’s an intelligent and crafty film that gives a nod to Marvel with references to iconic scenes and moments from the films MCU. The style is fully that de The Guardians of the Galaxy in version fantasy.
Film is a gaming experience, but not only: “It’s not just a game, it’s a feeling you get when you play. And that’s what we’re doing with this film, that’s what we wanted to capture.”. These are the words of the co-director Francis Daley. The references and the easter egg to the role-playing game are many, but above all the basis of the narrative is the scheme of a game of D&D. The film works because it is aimed at a general public and the game techniques have not been studied in too much detail, risking a pop vein and falling into a niche product.

An adventure film, with comedy reminiscent of the cult with Brandon Fraser, The Mummy (2001), aided by an exceptional ensemble cast. L’ensemble is led by Chris Pine, The Bardon him the Paramount has aimed heavily to attract audiences that are not familiar with D&D. The same goes for Michelle Rodrigueza perfect one Barbara, Justice Smith as the scoundrel sorcerer e Sophia Lillis in the role of Duric (the Druid – Tiefling), both for an audience teen. It adds to them Regé-Jean Page in the role of Zenk the Paladin and the return of Hugh Grant in the role of “The rogue”.
The story follows a group of reckless adventurers who fail to make the big shot of their lives and after being betrayed, our anti-heroes seek revenge in an attempt to recover a precious artifact. If you are a fan of D&D you will find a lot of quotes and respect for the spirit of the game: self-irony and not taking oneself seriously are the fundamental foundations for breaking the screens of the “serious”, between action and exciting moments.
Dungeons & Dragons – Thieves’ Honor has a very fast pace, never tires and, in some cases, the editing style recalls the heist movie Of Guy Ritchie, where there is no pause and you always understand what you are looking at. The story is simple, although the film must present many things, few elements are enough to characterize the characters. Some flashback and a few jokes to frame the elements of the group.

The classic hero’s journey, with all the tongs creating conflict and defiance with all the elements in place. Dungeons & Dragons – Thieves’ Honor it is also a film about the family, about overcoming a painful past and being able to move forward and get back into the game. The strength of the group is based especially on words, it evokes emotions, irony and forging new ties.
The world represented is much more pop than the great classics such as The Lord of the Ringsl, comparison to be avoided. There Middle Earth Of Tolkien may have shaped the genre fantasy medieval, but shouldn’t just define it. Adventures come in all shapes and sizes, and along the way they can make audiences laugh, cry or scream. The Lord of the Rings e Dungeons & Dragons they are two very different entertainments.
A film of pure entertainment, of adventure that reminds us that we are still capable of having fun. There is no shortage of many magical creatures that fans of the game will surely recognize, as well as the settings. As for the future of the universe of D&D it seems that the franchise you want to expand to seriality with an eight-episode TV series. It’s still unclear if and how it will tie into the film, but for fans of the fantasy it’s another chance to enter that beautiful, epic – now – high world budget.
