More than a review, what follows is an analysis inaugurated by a question: why must good potential and interesting ideas expire in stereotypes and inflated goods? It’s true that we’d find ourselves in an equally boring and mundane world if everyone approached show writing like Charlie Brooker o Vince Gilligan and that, sometimes, as he would say Carrie Bradshawnormality is rather reassuring.
Tryptich (Triad) is a Mexican television series based on a true story and created by Leticia López Margallavailable on Netflix starting February 22nd.
The eight episodes tell the story of Rebecca “Becca” (Maite Perroni) That “When she learns that she was separated at birth from her twin sisters, she embarks on a perilous journey to discover the truth about where she came from.”
Maite Perroni according to the use of the ancient interpreters, he gets by in a triple role, with distinct physical and character characteristics for each variant. She does it all correctly, standing out above all in the role of Tamara and leading an equally performing cast.
Nothing to say even for direction, photography and other components such as color palette and soundtrack. Finally, the idea is original, audacious, taken from a rather stimulating news story and constructed in a truly remarkable way: the trick of misdirection, for example, is a brilliant input.
The real tragedy is how this concrete and promising inspiration – without absolutely any need – was transformed into a 90s Latin American soap opera. With twists built to the Our land and suspense alla The secret.
Dark, My Brilliant Friend, Downton Abbey, Scrubs. Examples of extremely different shows, with a very specific identity, a very specific provenance, nevertheless managed to become attractive material on an international level without falling into farce or the accumulation of clichés. In fact, the intent of a writer to bring to the world a work that contains folk-traditional material combined with universal elements is a rather complex mission to which not very widespread skills belong.
It is evident that out of the hundreds of TV series on Netflix, most of which are original, not only can one not expect that these are all unforgettable shows but not even that they uniformly respond to the criteria for success.
In the case of Tryptich (Triad), where there was the story, where there was the cast, where there was good apparatus, the screenplay did not prove capable of reaching the desired goal and leaving a limited Mexican comfort zone.
With excellent premises made feasible thanks to an extremely performing lead actress and a good script idea, Tryptich did not live up to expectations.
