It seems that Netflix is getting into the habit of dividing the seasons into several parts: after the fourth batch of episodes of Stranger Things, the fourth of You also met the same fate.
That’s clearly a strategy the streaming giant is trying for its most successful shows, but the creative team behind the TV series also had a say. During a podcast, the showrunner Will Gamble in fact, he explained that Netflix asked the team if they wanted to split the season, and their writing style fit the idea perfectly:
“They certainly didn’t force it on us. They said, ‘We’ve been thinking about your season, and we know you have this mysterious structure. Do you think that would work?’ probably because Greg Berlanti and I wrote a lot of midseason cliffhangers for old school TV. I can’t help it, I need to create something really big in the middle of a season.”.
Penn Badgleythe face of the protagonist, said that the fourth season was not initially meant to be divided into two parts, but that he was OK with the way everything turned out:
“I think that’s just the economic reality of Netflix. And I think it makes sense, in general, to release things in installments. I like that. When I found that out, I was like, ‘Are we going to leave a month between episodes five and six? It’s a great diversion.’ Because, for me, you don’t realize until you finally see the cage.”.
The four seasons of You are available on Netflix.
