Ted Lasso 3 has finally made its debut on the Apple TV+ streaming service. Just today, the first episode of the new season of one of the best Apple TV+ series arrived on the platform. The story of optimistic and determined coach Ted Lasso won not only the hearts of AFC Richmond footballers, but also the spectators. And how could it be otherwise? In fact, this comedy bears the signature of Bill Lawrence, who has already been the co-creator of that little gem in the past Scrubs. We are curious now to find out what new emotions the series will give us in the third season. While waiting to find out how the AFC Richmond journey will end, we want to reveal an interesting background on the coach of the series.
Jason Sudeikis was inspired by real coaches to interpret Ted Lasso.
Optimistic, dreamer, kind with a smile always on his lips and with an unshakable trust: if you believe that such a person could never exist in reality, you are very wrong. The lead actor of the series, Jason Sudeikis, said he was inspired by several real people to outline his character. First of all, he wanted to pay homage to his high school basketball coach, a certain Donny Campbell, who just like Ted Lasso used to use strange but amusing aphorisms. In an interview he said:
“I was inspired by my high school basketball coach, Donny Campbell, a guy from a small town in Kansas who used to use a great deal of funny aphorisms. Like ‘Sudeikis, he looks more nervous than a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs.”
However, Jason Sudeikis has drawn inspiration above all from some coaches who have actually followed many Premier League teams. The actor admitted that there is a lot of Jürgen Klopp in coach Lasso. The story of the German manager, who managed to lead Liverpool to Premier League victory thirty years after their last victory, seemed perfect for creating the character of Ted Lasso. Jason Sudeikis said he was inspired above all by the relationship that Klopp is capable of establishing with the fans and with his players. He told the Sports Illustrated of an event in particular that he discovered and that struck him so much that he also wanted to include it in an episode of the comedy:
“Friend. When I heard that (Klopp) had taken his karaoke team, I thought, ‘Here’s a nice idea for our story’”.
And where did Ted Lasso’s signature mustache come from? From the Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola. The actor confessed to the The Today Show: “That’s where the mustache comes from and then Guardiola is really talkative too just like Ted Lasso“.
