The author of The Fly, Inseparable and A History of Violence has given shape to the dark side of the human being, making it explicit through metamorphosis. These are the great films of him that you can find in streaming.
David Cronenberg he is a unique filmmaker. No one like him has managed to put into images the power of transformation, the symbolic discourse that metamorphosis contains when applied to the human being. The phase of change, be it physical or simply psychological, involves for Cronenberg the definition of the very nature of the changing being. This is why he still remains today the greatest “passing” author, always personal standard bearer and never willing to compromise of a cinema that constantly wants to warn us, remind us that despite everything we are evolving into something new and perhaps still incomprehensible. Today David Cronenberg turns 80, and we intend to pay tribute to him with five of his magnificent film in streaming. Enjoy the reading.

The Fly (1986)
The most radical Hollywood film of the 80s, and certainly one of the most successful. Seth Brundle’s descent into hell is first and foremost human, that of a scientist blinded by a thirst for knowledge and a desire for triumph. The transformation of the monstrous being is the perfect metaphor for all of this. Oscar makeup for a desperate and livid film, written and directed with absolute mastery. Geena Davis e John Getz close a formidable trio of leading actors, with obviously Jeff Goldblum to give us the performance that is worth the legend. The fly it is an incredible, painful and terrifying film. But how much cinema does it contain…Available on CHILI, Google Play, Amazon Prime Video, Disney +.
A History of Violence (2005)
A film that contains a huge change in Cronenberg’s filmography, and for this it becomes fundamental as well as splendid. The metamorphosis into A History of Violence it is introjected, it concerns the human psyche more than the body, but it remains equally chilling and punctuated by the violence of the human being himself. Viggo Mortensen e Mary Bello they are excellent protagonists, Ed Harris e William Hurt amazing supporting actors. Based on an underground graphic novel, a film of unusual power. Cronenberg at his best, really. Available on CHILI, Amazon Prime Video.
Eastern Promises (2007)
Still Viggo Mortensen nominated for an Oscar for a thriller that explores London crime through the distorting lens of the author’s eye. Naomi Watts e Vincent Cassel they bend over backwards to support a visceral and unleashed protagonist, who makes de Assassin’s Promise another memorable film. The scene of the ambush in the Turkish baths is legendary, one of the strongest cinematic moments of our times. Others urban nightmare of the author. Available on Google Play, Amazon Prime Video, NOW.
Cosmopolis (2012)
The New York of Cosmopolis is ready to explode, it is a time bomb that makes a deafening and continuous noise, a sounding board where Robert Pattinson, Juliette Binoche, Paul Giamatti and everyone else moves with automated hysteria. One of Cronenberg’s best films, inspired and polyphonic. transposition from De Lillo of great workmanship, enormously underrated film. Available on Google Play, Amazon Prime Video, Rai Play.
Maps to the Stars (2014)
And finally Cronenberg moves to Los Angeles to tell parallel stories of personal dissolution and vain resentment within the muffled world of Hollywood. Pattinson again with Mia Wasikowska, John Cusack it’s a Julianne Moore from the Palme d’Or to Cannes for a very dense and dark drama under the blinding California sun. Maps to the Stars it is a calm feature film but only on the surface, also in this case the metaphorical worms that move under the skin of the characters are ready to explode…To be reviewed without prejudice, Cronenberg is always great…Available on CHILI, Google Play.
