Pantafa, the horror with Kasia Smutniak on hypnagogic paralysis
The mountain village Malanotte seems like a good destination for change airat least so thinks Marta (Kasia Smutniak), mother of little Nina, afflicted by hypnagogic paralysis: it’s about theinability to move upon awakening in REM sleep, when the body inhibits the movements, while we dream. Getting away from the city could possibly allow Nina to escape from this suffocation. But the being that Nina describes, a ghostly figure that suffocates her sitting on his chest, could it really exist? Marta is about to find out … and it will be just one of the mysteries she will face, because there are no other children in the village …
Pantafa takes up the Marche-Abruzzese legend of the pantaficasometimes depicted as a witch sometimes as a black cat, which prevents the sleeper from breathing. It seems that the idea it evokes has permeated the culture of those areas to such an extent that “pantafica” is sometimes used as a pure and simple synonym for “fear“.
