Triangle of Sadness, interview with Ruben Östlund: “I have combined the best of European and American cinema”
1. It is written and directed by acclaimed filmmaker Ruben Östlund
As mentioned above the film is written and directed by Östlund: originally from Sweden, the writer/director has earned critical acclaim many times in recent years, most notably in 2014 thanks to his comedy-drama Force Majeure. In 2017 he returned to the big screen with the black comedy The Square (starring Claes Bang, Elisabeth Moss and Dominic West), which earned him the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, and Triangle Of Sadness it is his first feature film since then. The filmmaker began working in the 1990s as a ski video director, before going on to study at the Gothenburg film school, where he graduated in 2001.
2. The film flows divinely despite its 140 minutes
It is more than understandable that even a cinema lover might hesitate in front of a film that lasts two hours and 20 minutes, but Triangle of Sadness it manages to keep you glued to the screen and there is no doubt that it is an extraordinary cinematic experience; not only because it is tremendously funny and outrageous, but also because the screenplay is beautifully written and impeccably structured: the film is divided into three chapters, entitled Carl and Yaya, the Yacht and Island.
3. A social satire aimed at the super rich
Pop culture has targeted the super rich very often in recent years, just think of films like Glass Onion – Knives Out, The Menu, Parasite and to television series such as The White Lotus and Squid Game. As we saw in our review of the film, Triangle Of Sadnessin that respect, certainly lives up to the aforementioned titles, being an incredibly sharp and well-crafted satirical comedy.
4. The incredible performances of Harris Dickinson and Woody Harrelson
The cast of Triangle Of Sadness it doesn’t feature a large number of easily recognizable stars, but it stars the likes of The King’s Man’s Harris Dickinson, here as the protagonist Carl, a model in his late 20s, and Woody Harrelson as the alcoholic captain of the luxury cruise. Charlbi Dean Kriek also earned critical acclaim for her portrayal of Yaya, but sadly she died prematurely at the age of 32 after wrapping up filming.
