Will Netflix’s best-selling thriller return for a fifth season? Here are the previews and everything we know about YOU 5.
The fourth season of YOUwhich was split into two parts, is now available in full at Netflix with all 10 episodes that compose it. If you have already seen the new episodes, you are surely wondering if the series with Penn Badgley will come back with one fifth season, given the rather open ending of the fourth. Will we see Joe Goldberg regain possession of his true identity and start yet another new life in America? Will the ghosts of the past continue to haunt him? And most importantly, will a homicidal stalker still get away with it? There are many questions that a fifth season – perhaps the last – should answer. Here’s what we know and all the advances available on the fifth season of YOU.
YOU renewed or cancelled?
Netflix has not yet announced a decision regarding the renewal or cancellation of YOU. Usually the streaming video service waits to evaluate the performance of a title in the first four weeks of its release. We will know in a few weeks, therefore, if YOU it will be officially renewed or cancelled.
The release date
For the moment we can only hypothesize a probable one exit date Of YOU 5 if the series were renewed. Given that the fourth season was confirmed for October 2021 and that filming began in March 2022, with a February 2023 release, it is possible that the fifth will be released in the summer of 2024.
YOU 5: The plot
Everything points to, however, that the streaming video service is inclined to renew, given the open finale of season 4. In the latest episode of YOU 4, in fact, we saw Joe reclaim his identity and return to New York, the city where it all began, together with his new love interest Kate (Charlotte Ritchie). Thanks to money from Kate’s family, Joe was able to clear his criminal record and put his many murders behind him. His goal now is to be a philanthropist with Kate: but will he really be able to keep his instincts at bay? Surely yes… at least until the next murder.
Statements from showrunner Sera Gamble
Interviewed by The Hollywood Reporterthe showrunner of YOU Will Gamble revealed that he already has plans for season 5 which, according to his statements, could definitely be the last:
“We have an idea for Season 5 that we’re excited about. We’re not going to rush things. When we’re done, we’ll be done. From our first conversations with Penn, it was clear the idea wasn’t to churn out episodes always. Our series continues in that tradition of single-protagonist series doing increasingly meaner things. The great thing is that when his arc is complete, so is the series.”
Gamble then focused on a really important point: at some point Joe will have to pay for his actions. But what does it mean, in his case, to bring him to justice? The showrunner said:
“Me, the writers and Greg (Berlanti), along with Penn, always talk about how it would be nice to end his story arc with some form of justice. How does Joe Goldberg end up in a world where he affected people with bricks in broad daylight for years? And he’s cute! And he gets away with it. The deeper question we often ask ourselves in the writers’ room is ‘What is true justice? What would hurt him the most?’
The Cast: Who’s Coming Back?
YOU would not be YOU without Penn Badgley, so the actor will definitely be back. Joining him will be Charlotte Ritchie as Kate. It’s unlikely we’ll see the many London characters known in season 4 again as all of their storylines have been shut down. Marienne (played by Tati Gabrielle) she technically survived, although Joe believes her dead; the actress, therefore, could theoretically return, but it is unlikely that Marienne wants to see Joe again after what she has suffered because of her. Furthermore, a return of Jenna Ortega as Ellie Alves, a character known in season two. The showrunner of YOU, who would have wanted her already in the fourth season, said that the doors are open for her. It will only be necessary to understand if the actress will be able to reconcile her commitments with the filming of the second season of Wednesday.
