Outer Banks it is certainly one of the Netflix phenomena of the moment, which with the arrival of the new season has managed to once again catalyze the attention of the younger audience, remaining in the Top Ten on the platform even a few weeks after its release. Thanks to the mix that combines teen drama and adventure drama, The O.C. e I Goonies, creating a tasty and refreshing smoothie to sip carefree on the beach. Shortly before the arrival of the third season, the series has already been renewed for a fourth cycle of episodes, confirming the investment by Netflix on the show, and so it feels like the perfect time to make a point of where we are with this year’s finale and where we’re going in the new installments.
Obviously, it should be noted that the article contains spoilers for those who have not seen the third season in full.
Where were we
Il Outer Banks 3 season finale essentially closed the storylines of three seasons, finally reuniting dad Big John (Charles Halford) and John B. (Chase Stokes) in search of the lost treasure of the Royal Merchant and the legendary city of The Golden. After a series of chases and fights in the jungle with the thugs of Singh, the boy and Sarah (Madelyn Cline) managed to find it, putting an end to the ancient feud between their two families and becoming the heroes of the place together with friends JJ (Rudy Pankow), Kiara (Madison Bailey), Pope (Jonathan Daviss) and Cleo (Carlacia Grant). Even Big John and Ward (Charles Esten) finally reunited after years and had their showdown, after the second tried to kill the first on the boat in the name of treasure hunting. Since in this series the faults of the fathers inevitably fall on the children, the circle is closed with the sacrifice of both parents in the name of their children. This is how both Big John, who has just been found, and Ward leave us after all that he has done to the detriment of all the characters in three seasons.
Outer Banks 3, the review: the road to El Dorado
The connection with the new episodes
It’s also 18 months into the last scene of the season finale, when the museum dedicated to the Royal Merchant, Denmark Tanny, and of course the city of El Dorado is inaugurated. We find out that Kiara is rescuing the turtles, Pope is finally in college, Sarah and John B. have opened a surf shop and JJ has bought a boat of her own. In short, things are going well for the Pogues but it will be interesting to find out if there will be flashbacks from those 18 months in the new episodes to explain some background on how we got there and the evolution that has taken place in the relationship between the characters.
Furthermore, a certain Wes Genrette (the new entry David Jensen, who we will probably see again in the new episodes) shows up at the organized party with a 1718 logbook from the ship of Edward Teach aka the legendary Blackbeard, a pirate who appeared right off the coast of the Outer Banks: another treasure is on the horizon. It is therefore to be expected that the boys will have to face a new hunt for another legendary treasure and that in the midst of the dangers they will also have to consolidate the balance found within the group. That’s because now not only do John B. and Sarah, who have passed the most difficult test of all – that of parenting – but also JJ and Kiara, and Pope and Cleo respectively. After the feud between the Routledges and the Camerons, however, Sarah’s brother Rafe (Drew Starkey) remains in charge of the shack and now that Ward is officially dead, he could take over again villain of the protagonists to maintain the social struggle at the base of the story: the rich Kooks against the poor and penniless Pogues.

Where are we going to go
Authors Josh Pate, Jonas Pate and Shannon Burkett, who stated that “creating Poguelandia was a dream come true“, they are writing the screenplays of the fourth season, which should always be composed of 10 episodes as per tradition for the show. Filming will begin in May in South Carolina and wrap towards the end of the year, with a Netflix airing scheduled for spring/summer 2024. Their initial plan was for four seasons but have now stated that they are considering expanding it. Now that everyone in the story is a couple, another pairing could be Rafe and Barry (Nicholas Cirillo), while Rafe and Topper (Austin North) could bury the hatchet and be united by their common enemy, the you can, and take revenge against them. The authors also stated that what we will see in the fourth season “it won’t be the usual Blackbeard story that everyone knows“. We could not expect anything different from Outer Banks.
