The second part of YOU 4 is available on Netflix which completes an out of focus season, with some brilliant intuition but a lot of confusion: how much longer can this series last? Our review.
The fourth season Of YOU it had presented itself to the public, already from the trailers, very different from the previous ones. A new location, a formula that mixes yellow and thriller (at least in the first half), sex scenes reduced to the bone (at the behest of the same Penn Badgley) and, above all, one division into two blocks unedited that made this chapter on the one hand full of suspense and surprises, on the other hand too confusing. Now that they’ve come on Netflix The last 5 episodes of the season, we can sum up in one review and we ask ourselves: having arrived at this point, YOU still have something to say? It’s hard to talk about it without spoilersbut we try.
YOU 4, review: Brilliant intuition, then chaos
If the first part of YOU season 4 had in fact reinvented the series by turning it into a murder mistery in London sauce and with Joe (Penn Badgley) grappling with his new immaculate identity of Professor Jonathan Moore, the second part went back a bit to the origins showing us again the murderous stalker we knew. Indeed, a “pro” version of Joe Goldberg that makes clear the inner torments of him and from Murder, She Wrote becomes Dr. Jekill and Mr. Hyde. Ok the psychological analysis, but YOU it is not Mindhunter and none of us expect a sophisticated thriller. Where has the trash gone? The real reason why, let’s face it, we watch this series. The authors were good at overturning every possible prediction by inserting twists and turns tremendous fan service returnspleasant as well (Charlotte Ritchie and his Kate, in any case, do not pass the test of comparison with Victoria Pedretti and Love, a character who was far more interesting). But chaos eventually sets in, among useless characters like Lady Phoebe (Tilly Keeper) e Adam (Lukas Gage) and unlikely alliances, so much so that the last few episodes are even difficult to follow.
YOU: Give us one last season, then that’s it
Watching the final episode of YOU 4, at one point, it almost seems that the entire series is about to reach a definitive epilogue. As if the writers had wanted to prepare a series finale, in case of a last minute cancellation. Then the sudden change of plans: as often happened in the past, they take a paradoxical and obviously impassable path in real life (and we also like this, that’s not the problem) to carry on the story. But how many times can a mass murderer like Joe Goldberg get away with it? We arrive at the end of the viewing frankly exhausted and we would just like to write a nice letter to Netflix: if you really wanted to drag it out like this, shall we say that next season is the last?
