Michelle Yeoh had published a post on Instagram in which she reported a Vogue article in which the impact of the Asian actress’s possible victory was compared to that of Cate Blanchett. However, the post was immediately deleted as it violated Academy rules.
Less and less until the next award ceremony of the Oscar, which will take place live on Sunday, March 12 from the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles. And, like every time, a small twist (with related controversy) could not be missing a few days before 95th edition of the Academy Awards.
Oscar 2023, Michelle Yeoh publishes a post on social media and violates the rules of the Academy
In fact, a few hours ago Michelle Yeohprotagonist of the award-winning Everything Everywhere All at Once, – in nomination per l’Oscar 2023 as Best Film – published (and then immediately deleted) a post in which it reported some excerpts from a Vogue article dedicated to the nominees for the Best Actress category. The article in question – It’s been more than two decades since we’ve had a non-white Best Actress winner. Will it change in 2023? – compared the possible victory of Yeoh with that of an actress like Cate Blanchett (applicant in the same category with Tyear), emphasizing how, in the case of the first, the victory of an Academy Award:
“it would be life-changing: her name would forever be preceded by the description ‘Academy Award winner’ and should allow her to land bigger parts, after a decade in which she was criminally underrated in Hollywood.”
According to the Vogue article, in fact, Cate Blanchett she is, undoubtedly, one of the best actresses around and her performance as Lydia Tis definitely deserving of awards and accolades. Yet, the article concludes, “considering his extensive and unrivaled body of work, do we still need more confirmation?”. But why Michelle Yeoh did you delete that post?
Apparently, the Academy Rules, in Article 11, would expressly prohibit any reference to other candidates in any promotional campaign. Something very similar had already happened with the controversial nomination of Andrea Riseboroughsurprise nominee in the Best Actress category along with the aforementioned Yeoh, Blanchett, Ana de Armas e Michelle Williams. The actress’s candidacy had come unexpected, given that the film had been little publicized on social media and had been distributed in a few theaters in the USA, but thanks to continuous word of mouth and promotion by her colleagues, Riseborough had been nominated.
On that occasion, theAcademy had investigated and found that there had been “irregular” promotion campaigns on social networks, with the publication – for example – of a post on the official account of the Riseborough film of an excerpt with the ten best films of the year critic Richard Roeper, in which Tár was mentioned, also later deleted. However, in the end theAcademy had not considered revoking the nomination, which is why, even in the case of Michelle Yeoh there shouldn’t be any problems and the actress will be able to compete with her colleagues, waiting to find out the name of the winner, on the night of Sunday 12 March 2023.
