The project officially announced on January 11 was conceived as backdoor pilot – or an episode of a TV series that can act as a launch pad for a possible spin-off of the mother series by introducing new protagonists, a new setting and the premise from which the story springs – and is aired on March 13 in the United States . To see then a glimpse of The Good Lawyer we will have to wait for the thirteenth episode of the sixth season of The Good Doctor in which the two protagonists Joni and Janet will make their debut in the series.

Kennedy McMann (seen in Nancy Drew) plays Joni DeGroot, the brilliant, funny and self-aware lawyer who is relatively new to her prestigious law firm when she takes on Shaun’s case. Suffering from OCD, Joni never wanted to be treated differently. While her symptoms impact her personal and professional life, her attention to detail allows her to view cases through a different lens.
The Emmy Award-winning actress Felicity Huffman (famous for Deseprate Housewives e American Crime), will enter the role of Janet Stewart, a prized lawyer and law firm partner with a fierce intellect and dry wit. An industry veteran, Janet has represented Dr. Aaron Glassman (Richard Schiff) in various legal matters over the years, so she comes to represent her beloved protégé. But when Shaun declares that he wants Joni to represent him, Janet is forced to let Joni handle the case. This is the first major role for Huffman, who in 2019 was sentenced to 14 days in prison for paying a $15,000 bribe to help her daughter get into college.
Bethlehem Million (Sicklisten)) is Joni’s older sister, as well as being her biggest supporter, roommate, and best friend.

If the backdoor pilot episode — written by co-showrunners David Shore and Liz Friedman and directed by Ruben Fleischer — gets the desired approval from the network, ABC will proceed to commission an entire first cycle of the spin-off for the 2023/2024 television season.

This is the second cornerstone of the American ABC network schedule to earn a spin-off. During this television season the Disney-owned network has launched The Rookie: Feds, series that comes from a rib of the show with Nathan Fillion. Leading the cast of the project is Niecy Nash-Betts, recently seen in Claws. According to some rumors, ABC has long wanted to launch a spin-off of The Good Doctorreplicating the strategy that resulted Grey’s Anatomy to originate not one but two spin-offs (Private Practice e Station 19). It seems last year a possible spin-off under consideration by ABC and Sony TV – the studio that produces the series – was the one that would have had Dr. Claire Brown (Antonia Thomas) involved with Doctors Without Borders as the protagonist.
