Chicago Fire, Severide leaves (temporarily) the series: here’s how
Kelly Severide lascia Chicago Fire, at least for a while. At the end of January it emerged that Taylor Kinney – the 41-year-old American actor who starred in the series on firefighters created by Dick Wolf – was temporarily absent from the set of the eleventh season of Chicago Fire, currently on air with the eleventh season on the NBC generalist network in the United States and on Sky and Now in our country.
An NBC spokesman confirmed the news, specifying that Kinney’s decision stems from the actor’s desire to devote himself to some personal matters and adding that it is a goodbye and not a goodbye. At the moment it does not seem, in fact, that Kinney has left permanently Chicago Fire; his return is expected soon – who knows – perhaps even before the end of the eleventh season.
Meanwhile, the first episode in which Kinney did not take part was broadcast in the United States. Wednesday, March 1, “Damage Control” aired the 15th episode of season 11. The episode in question had the task of explaining the – sudden – disappearance of Severide. The series had to justify Kelly Severide’s absence through dialogue between other characters, as Kinney was not on set when that episode was filmed.

At the beginning of episode 15 of Chicago Fire 11, Van Meter (Tim Hopper) explains that Kelly Severide has left for Alabama to take part in a special training course dedicated to those who are part of the arson investigation section. It is – Van Meter explains to Wallace Boden (Eamonn Walker) – a one-of-a-kind opportunity for career advancement that she presented as a surprise. Severide, rightly so, didn’t let it get away and left in no time at all for the intensive professional course.
Van Meter specifies to Boden – and indirectly to the public – that this does not mean that Severide will transfer indefinitely to OFI, or the arson investigations section. Simply, Severide will develop a formation that all of station 51 will then treasure. Obviously, in her absence, each member of the team will have to take on a part of the work that normally fell to Kelly, but Van Meter is sure that all this will benefit their unit in the long run. In the episode we also see Lieutenant Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) – Severide’s wife – grappling with her husband’s sudden departure.
