One of the directors of Super Mario Bros. The Movie has taken the defense of Chris Pratt as the voice of the protagonist, anticipating that he is perfect for the part.

Since the very first announcements related to Super Mario Bros. The Movie, a series of discussions arose in the audience. A debate that still fuels comments and controversies today is linked to the choice of Chris Pratt as the voice of the protagonist, but Aaron Horvath, one of the film’s directors, took care of it to reassure all the fans.
“It’s an origin story. It’s the story of Mario becoming Super Mario”Aaron Horvath told the magazine Total Filmadding that finding a perfect voice for the protagonist of Super Mario Bros. The Movie, meant finding an actor capable of playing the role of a Brooklyn plumber, “of a worker from a family of Italian immigrants”ready for a great adventure.
“It made total sense to us”, he later said about the casting of Chris Pratt. The director explained: “He’s really, really good at playing our hero in a blue uniform and with a lot of heart. This actor is perfect for just the way Mario is characterized in the film”.
