Variety reported what the co-creator, Bill Dubuque, he said of the series’ epilogue during Friday’s press and public briefing. First of all answered the question that all fans have been asking themselves for several months: was it Jonah who shot in the last scene of the episode? The co-creator suggested that each viewer can imagine the ending they want, but confirmed that in fact this is exactly what happened in the ending. Even Jonah Byrde got blood on his hands to protect his family, eventually perpetuating the Byrdes’ trail of crimes and murders. Here’s what he said Bill Dubuque:
“Surely in my mind, and anyone is free to think what they want, but in my mind, he absolutely shot Mel and Mel died. And this is all. I just didn’t want to see it. It was finished. If you shot him, there’ll be blood and guts… but the series was over.
During the panel Julia Garner and the creators of the tv series have also commented on another of the big twists that shocked the fans of Ozarkthe death of Ruth. Everyone agreed that this was the perfect way to honor the character’s history. Julia Garner noted that “(Ruth) was already dead. Her soul was dead, she was physically here, but in the last four episodes she was already dead.” Bill Dubuque he also added:
“It was the right decision for the series. Ruth was a stronger character in death than she would have been if she had gone to live somewhere. That was our hope for the show. Being everyone’s favorite character – Jason’s favorite character, my favorite character – we just wanted to do it justice.”
