Since when The White Lotus, a product of the HBO broadcaster, has landed on the small screen and has won awards and viewers all over the world. The television series from the anthological genre has had two seasons so far: the first took place in Hawaii, while the second – which recently ended – saw the protagonists of the television series in Sicily. For those unfamiliar with the plot, the HBO show centers on the personal and professional vicissitudes of the staff and guests of a luxury resort over the course of a week-long vacation.
The first season offered the interpretation of Jennifer Coolidge, Murray Bartlett, Connie Britton e Sydney Sweeney, thus obtaining 10 Emmy Awards. The second season brought back the Coolidge (who spoke of a possible spin-off) as the character from the first season, while among the new cast members include Aubrey Plaza, Meghann Fahy, Theo James e Michael Imperioli.
The Emmy Awards have switched categories to HBO’s hit show, and there’s a reason behind it
The limited series category will say goodbye to Ask e Co. at the 2023 Emmy Awards. The Television Academy will no longer admit The White Lotus in the limited / anthological category and Variety has confirmed that the TV series will move to the drama category, where it will have to fight with level and very competitive colleagues.
In 2021, the Television Academy defined what falls within the definition of a limited or anthology TV series, explaining that the story must be resolved within its season, with no ongoing storylines allowed.
However, since the character of Jennifer Coolidge is the only one to return for the second season, the organization determined that “the reappearance in a subsequent season of a character from a large group does not prevent eligibility under the Academy’s main criteria for limited series“.
Among the prizes, either Coolidge That Bartlett earned Emmys for solo acting, while the show’s Mike White won the award for best limited series/anthology.
Since then things have changed. The White Lotus has already been renewed for a third season and, (spoiler alert for those who haven’t seen the series yet!) though Tanya won’t be returning, the Television Academy has made a decision and the show must move into a new category. The television series has already moved from being limited to the drama category at both the SAG Awards and the Critics Choice Awards, and the Critics Choice Jennifer Coolidge he won both seasons.
At the Golden Globes she remained in limited for both seasons.
The drama TV series category is likely to be brimming with standouts, with former winner – and fellow HBO – Succession back in the race. Among the other series in contention at this year’s Emmy Awards will include Better Call Saul, Yellowjackets, Andor, The Mandalorian e The Crownbeyond The Last of Us e House of the Dragon of HBO.
