Timeless star of Buffy the Empire Slayerwho with her iconic quotes made us dream for years, kidnapping us in memorable episodes like The Hush, Sarah Michelle Gellar became part of the world of TV from a very young age.
As a child she began to navigate between commercials and small interpretations, before finding the great role which made it eternal in our hearts.
Today the actress is 45 years old, has an established career and a globally recognized talent, but to get to this point of mess tin she had to make a lot of it, appearing in several small parts which allowed her to get known by the bigger names.
Just one of Sarah Michelle Gellar’s first appearances overwhelmed the star at just 5 years old, making her part of a war between two fast food giants.
In 1981, 16 years before getting the part of Buffy, the actress took part in a advertising per Burger Kingin which he underlined the better quality of the chain compared to the competitor, McDonald’s.
At the time, the two companies were engaged in aepic fightwhich induced Burger King to create a commercial that denigrated the contestant, using Gellar’s image. The little girl appeared in the advertisement sitting on a bench in front of one of the premises of Burger Kingwhere he explained how their products were better than Mc’s, because the portions for the little ones weren’t reduced.
It was the first time in history that the name of another company was mentioned in an advertisement in a negative way and the reaction of the fast food giant was quite severe, as the actress reminds BuzzFeed UK.
It’s really funny. This was a big campaign I did for Burger King as a 5 year old. I was the first person to say another contestant’s name in a commercial, so McDonald’s sued the ad agency, Burger King, and me at age 5.
Thus, Gellar found herself as a very small girl at the center of a judicial war, a dispute which was then ended outside the courtroom with an agreement. During the lawsuit, however, the actress was no longer allowed to eat in the restaurant.
It was very difficult, because when you’re little, McDonald’s is where all your friends have their birthday parties, so I missed a lot of apple pies.
What Gellar remembers most, though, is the disappointment proven in discovering that what you saw in the commercials was not the reality.
What I learned that day is that when they make hamburgers for commercials, they glue each seed on top of it to make it look perfect and beautiful, fill it with shellac, and paint it. Guys, TV isn’t real.
It was a bad discovery for Gellar, who had waited a long time to eat one of those sandwiches, since her mother didn’t often allow it. But on the occasion of the commercial she had been granted a small transgression, which turned out to be a great disappointment when she, the actress, discovered that the sandwich was actually inedible.
Sarah Michelle Gellar has made it from those days on the road, becoming an adult woman and a great artist, who recently returned to the screen in a new fantasy production for Paramount+.
